Doctors and nurses saved Kezia Obama during a visit to Britain seven years ago, when she suffered chronic kidney failure.
The 66-year-old, who now lives in Bracknell, Berkshire, said she would never have been able to afford healthcare if she had been in America at the time.
Ms Obama told the News of the World: "It's very simple: I owe my life to the NHS.
"If it wasn't for the NHS I wouldn't have been alive to see our family's greatest moment - when Barack became President and was sworn into the White House."
The intervention came after Republicans branded the NHS "evil" and "Orwellian" amid a major row over Mr Obama's plans for US healthcare reform.
Ms Obama said she fell seriously ill during a summer visit to Britain seven years ago.
"I suffered severe kidney failure and pancreatic problems so there was a very real chance I might not have made it," she said.
"I was very down at the time but luckily I was here in Britain, in what was then a foreign country to me, where the doctors, nurses and surgeons cared for me like I was their own child."
The widow, who attended President Obama's inauguration in January, turned to the NHS again five years ago when she needed two hip replacement operations.
"If I'd been asked to pay for my new hips, well, I wouldn't have been able to afford them," she said. "I would have without a doubt ended up confined to a wheelchair."

Gee, I should tell my 45 year old friend who had acute renal failure (due to Chronic alcoholism/dehydration) that Medicaire really DIDN’T pick up the tab for folks on dialysis.

If it was chronic, how did she just happen to be visiting Britain when it happened. Any bets on a known, preexisting condition for which she flew from (presumably) Kenya to Britain for free treatment?
Also, doesn't she have a millionaire stepson in the US who could have picked up her bill if she had been here?

Yep! I was gonna say: her heartless greedy stepson certainly wouldn't have picked up the tab, that's for sure. Just ask his impoverished aunt who's required to live hand-to-mouth, dependent totally on the kindness of strange taxpayers who are compelled to help her through their compulsory gifts to their government.

Stepmom knew very well she had a much better chance of sticking the anonymous overburdened taxpayers in the UK with her bill because they haven't the freedom to decline to pay for her care the way her selfish amoral millionaire stepson clearly does, the same man who routinely jetted off to five star resorts in the islands to escape his mansion in Chicago & left the burden of providing care for her, his homeless aunt and his hovel-bound half-brother, to others who are struggling to care for their own families while he whoops it up on his monthly luxury vacations.
