Milwaukee Mayor Tom Barrett was recovering Sunday morning after he was beaten with a pipe after leaving the Wisconsin State Fair with his family Saturday night.
The mayor is said to be in good condition this morning.
Patrick Curley, Barrett's chief of staff said the mayor was resting at the hospital Sunday morning. Although he could not give details on the injuries, Curley said there were "no signs of major trauma."
"He's exhausted obviously, but he's resting," Curley said. "All his vitals are good - he can carry on brief conversations."
The incident occurred about 10:45 p.m. in the 8800 block of W. Orchard St. in West Allis, according to a joint statement from the West Allis police and Milwaukee police.
Barrett and his family were returning to their car when they saw an altercation and heard a woman shouting that someone should call 911. Barrett began calling 911 when the suspect who had been attacking the woman, ran toward Barrett and began striking him with a metal pipe.
The suspect then fled the scene. Police are still searching for the man, who police said had a criminal arrest record.
Barrett was taken to a local hospital for treatment. The statement said he was alert and talking when he arrived.
The woman who originally called for help was not injured.
Barrett usually travels with a security detail when attending official events, according to Curley. As with many private affairs, the mayor chose not to have security with him at the Fair Saturday.
Curley said Common Council President Willie Hines had been briefed on the mayor's condition. Under the city's line of succession, Hines would take command if the mayor were unable to perform his duties for any reason.
A briefing on the incident is expected early this afternoon.
Dang!!
Isn’t he the anti-gun mayor?
Doyle’s trying to do his best to snuff ours out before he resigns...where in NoDak did you end up?
So is this better than he was before the attack?
How dare the thug not respect a 911 call.
He has been vocally against Obama’s plan.
I wonder if this is a set up by union thugs or just an random crazy. Whatever the case, it is possible that the woman was just creating a distraction in order to make the mayor vulnerable.
Wisconsin is one of only two states that does not allow concealed carry of handguns.
Yep, and tomorrow he'll be the anti-pipe mayor.
"all that we're saying is that we need some common sense pipe controls..."
This smells fishy.
Fargo. Marcus Corporation over-charges at the theaters here too.
Barrett is a democrat, supporter of obama, and I would guess a supporter of the various democrat/obama health plan(s).
Barrett is an ex Demmy Congressman. I’m surprised the JS (jerk and slime) didn’t blame it on Republican operatives or Sarah Palin.
I’m hoping from this that the Mayor gains a greater appreciation for self-defense.
You're not the only one. Mercury Marine is about to fly the coop to Oklahoma.

Never bring a Cell Phone to a Pipe Fight.
I guess 911 safety is nothing but a pipe dream. CCW makes for a polite public and a wary criminal population. Ever been to a gun show? Everyone there is so polite and respectful.
