The WH maintains a massive e-mail list as part of its effort to promote its position on pressing issues. On Thursday, senior adviser David Axelrod used the list to send out a "chain" e-mail asking supporters of health care reforms backed by the administration to forward his rebuttal to criticism circulating on Internet.
The mail offered reasons to support Obama's agenda and tried to debunk what the White House decries as myths in the health care debate.
...
But some people who received the e-mails directly from the White House forwarded them to FOX News and asked how they ended up on the list when they've never been in communication with the Obama administration. Some wondered if visiting the White House Web site automatically places them on an e-mail distribution list.
...
Asked whether the White House seeks other pieces of information to identify those who might be curious about health care even though they have never signed up for e-mails or visited the Web site, Gibbs said he would have to see the e-mails to know.
Pressed to explain why he couldn't answer, Gibbs said "Well, I hesitate to give you an answer because you might impugn the motives of the answer."
"Why would you say that?" Garrett asked incredulously.
"Because of the way you phrased your follow up. I'd have to look at what you got, Major. I appreciate the fact that I have omnipotent clarity as to what you've received in your e-mail box today," Gibbs said.
"You don't have to have omnipotent clarity. You don't have to impugn anything," Garrett fired back. "I'm telling you what I got: e-mails from people who said I never asked anything from the White House."
Ending the exchange, Gibbs said, "Let me go someplace else that might be constructive."

OK so I would be guessing that all through school and college you got very high marks in "Missing the point completely'!
What's illegal about this is the law prohibiting it that was written in 1966 or so. It was designed to keep people like Richard Nixon from creating whitehouse lists.......(enemy lists in his case)
The left is now facing their own hyperbole.
That is a precious thought..........LOL
I know they retain that info and that is a calculated risk I take by being an internet junky :) It takes it to a whole new level though to think this administration, which I oppose and fear, may have me flagged. I would not put anything past them and worry about the worst case scenarios, however unlikely they may be.
It is the government that should be fearful of the people.
The list, ping
The resignation story was on Drudge Report and the next White House story was the flagatwhitehouse story!!!
Really? I didn’t know that. Can you cite a corroborating story?
Check Google, “Melissa Hathaway” and you’ll see she resigned August 3. Fishtapo started with a White House blog notice Aug. 4.
Seriously, investigate this. Check the dates. If the cyber czar resigned within 5-7 days of the launch of the flag program, then you may have a big story there. Find out what the stated reasons were for the resignation. Get after it - if you’re on target, you might create a new freeper legend.
No one at Fox did this. I emailed my Democrat Rep. on health reform. Never got a response until I got Axelrod’s. Clearly the little Rat minions on the Hill were told to notify Axelrod of the identity of “protesters”. Disgusting!!! This must be why the White House cybersecurity czarina resigned August 3, because Fishstapo started Aug. 4.
Nope. Congress —your congresscritter, especially a RAT, is the source!! I only contacted my Congressman, and I got the email too—never went on the White House website.
So, when was it that you contacted your Democrat rep on the Hill?
The resignation was announced Aug 3 or 4, and will take place at end of month.
The flag program per White House website has a date of August 4, meaning it was concocted before that date.
Melissa Hathaway resigned Aug. 3 . Fishstapo Aug.4

Just had a thought
Which may mean if she had scruples and was not in favor with the spying program told them she was resigning (”for personal reasons”).
Major waited until he had gotten specific permission from a large group of people who had Emailed the question to FNC to share their identifying information with the White House. Then he called Gibbs and offered (3 times) to give Gibbs the data if Gibbs promised to tell him how those specific people got on Axelrod’s list.
I doubt Gibbs will keep his end of the bargain. We will see, as I’m sure Garrett will update his report.
The flag program was a way of creating an explanation for David Axelrod’s emails going out to persons who never contacted the White House—for months, the White House has been collecting data on opponents of health care from members of Congress—meaning TWO branches of government colluded against the citizenry to do this!!! The flag program was an almost silly contrivance, clearly, so that people would think their names had been “reported” — when the White House HAD ACTIVELY COLLECTED THEIR EMAIL ADDRESSES FROM CONGRESSCRITTERS. Be afraid. Be very afraid.
I’ll buy that theory. No tinfoil hat needed.
