THE first signs have emerged that former US vice-president Dick Cheney lost faith in his former boss George W.Bush for going "soft" after refusing to listen to his advice.
Mr Cheney, who has always steadfastly supported the former US president, has reportedly told colleagues and political experts of his disappointment as Mr Bush's resolve weakened in response to souring public opinion during his second term.
According to The Washington Post, the man often called the most influential vice-president in US history has made known his feelings during discussions about a memoir he is writing that publishers have been told is "packed with news".
The indication Mr Cheney would write a tell-all book is a surprise to observers such as former White House spokesman Ari Fleischer, who say it would be out of character for him to disclose what occurred behind closed doors.
But Mr Cheney has been persuaded to tell his side of the story by his daughter Liz. He is also keen to defend his record and warn of dangers after criticising the Obama administration's reversal of Bush national security policies that he believes increase the risk of another terrorist attack on US soil.
Mr Cheney's disappointment with Mr Bush surfaced recently, according to The Washington Post, during discussions of his book project.
A participant in the discussions said: "In the second term, he felt Bush was moving away from him. He said Bush was shackled by the public reaction and the criticism he took.
"Bush was more malleable to that. The implication was that Bush had gone soft on him, or rather Bush had hardened against Cheney's advice. He'd showed an independence that Cheney didn't see coming. He should write about it, it will be helpful to an understanding of why Bush ended up a failure.
This story is nonsense. Cheney is not that way.
“This story is nonsense. Cheney is not that way.”
He’s too classy a guy to sink that low... and so is Bush.
Cheney turning on Dubya?
BULL!
“Mr Cheney was also bitterly unhappy about Mr Bush’s refusal to grant a pardon to the vice-president’s former chief of staff Lewis “Scooter” Libby after a conviction in 2007 for perjury and obstruction of an investigation into a leak of a clandestine CIA officer’s identity.”
I’d like to hear Bush explain that one. It was a Clinton holdover in Bush’s cabinet who appointed the special prosecutor (Fitzgerald) and steered the case to some kangaroo judge. Libby was obviously railroaded and wiped out by his defense costs. The prosecutor knew that Libby was innocent before the trial even started. All Bush did in the end was to commute the sentence.
I agree ..he may voice some qualms about things ...but the idea that Bush went soft in the face of public opinion is BS ...What the hell was everyone bitching about ? Bush did what he thought was right inspite of a relentless hurricame of public opinion.
I agree with you. Cheney has class. His wife has class. There will be no tell-all.
