Les Paul has died at age 94. His electric guitar designs and innovations were central to the development of rock guitar artistry beginning in the early 1950s and continuing to this day. He was playing to the very end, too, in small groups in New York clubs.

So long to a great one...

Rest in Peace, Les.
You were one of the greatest musicians that ever lived.

The guy contributed a lot and had a great run. Was also very charming when a guest on late-night radio in NYC in recent years.

Les Paul I caught him at a show last year.
He was one of those people whose work and life was brimming with optimism. When I got him to autograph my guitar his eyes were crystal clear and gave evidence of a man with an ailing body yet in full command of his faculties.

My guitar will be weeping tonight.

Indeed. What an amazing and full life though.

“His first prototype, solid-body electric guitar was made out of a railroad tie.”

Interesting. I’d like to hear that creosote sound.

Check this out: Les and Mary performing “How High the Moon” while showcasing one of the earliest demonstrations of multi-track recording.

His work in music goes far beyond the guitar. He was an early developer of the "sound on sound" echo effects using tape delay, and he pretty much invented the concept of multi-track recording. Anyone who's ever heard of "Frippertronics" should realize that if not for Les Paul, they never would have existed.

And his work with Chet Atkins was unbelievable. (the "Chester and Lester" albums.)

Under the Obama Death Care Plan Les Paul would have been ordered to take a pill and die quietly back in 2006 or before.

“He had been hospitalized in February 2006”

JA, IIRC, there were 15 minute TV shows in the afternoon in the 50s. One was the Les Paul and Mary Ford show, followed by the 15 minute Dinah Shore Show (see the USA in your Chevrolet).

I thank my mom that we always had music in the house. Our 42 year old son plays guitar in various bands. He talks about Les Paul as being "the source."

Yes, you’re right. I remember so many songs from the 50s—I was just a kid, but sure enjoyed hearing them. Seems to me that I recall the radio/TV/hifi having pretty good sound, very rich; but maybe that’s just memory enhancement...
