Les Paul has died at age 94. His electric guitar designs and innovations were central to the development of rock guitar artistry beginning in the early 1950s and continuing to this day. He was playing to the very end, too, in small groups in New York clubs.

So long to a great one...

He called it "The Log." He straped "wings" on it to disguise it as a "normal" hollow body guitar. No one could tell it was a solid body electric.

And I'll bet that sumbi+ch rocked.

At least until very recently, he had been playing weekly at the Iridium Jazz Club.

I was a gig RR fan. And to think young Randy got to heaven before he did. Both were gentle souls & brilliant talents.

Sure changed rock. Him and Leo Fender. Leo Fender, Les Paul and Jim Marshall were the bones that rock and roll were founded on.

A good thing, I promise. I knew his playing was a big influence on me but didn’t realize how much till I saw that video.

I am jealous he has more hair than me. :)

One rather interesting fact about Randy, which I remember from an interview with his mother in Guitar World about twenty years ago, was that his favorite album around the time of his death was Phil Collins's Face Value.

Probably the big think I’ve stolen from Alex, playing-wise, is the use of suspended chords. It’s my opinion that, were he playing in a lesser band, he would be more renowned than he already is.

And another one (although he's played one of everything throughout his career):

And it looks like he's got a Floyd on his Les Paul, too!

I use a fair amount of suspended chords as well in my writing and Lifeson is probably one of the reasons I do.

Still love everything from Moving Pictures back to the beginning. Those were their “glory” days in my mind. Some of the stuff since then has been nice and technically well played but just hasn’t flicked my switch the way the old stuff still does when I hear it.

My beloved 2000 Les Paul Classic. Sweetest guitar I've ever owned!

Thanks Les!
