How Gawker Ripped Off My Newspaper Story (FR and WaPo Lawsuit mention)
Deleware Online | 8/5/2009 | Ian Shapira

Posted on 08/10/2009 1:57:10 PM PDT by markomalley

Link only, per FR posting rules. Link to article is here

TOPICS: Business/Economy; Culture/Society; Extended News
KEYWORDS: copyright; frmention
The article talks about an attempt to amend the existing copyright law so that it extends "unfair competition rights" protection afforded newspapers to include "parasitic free-rider" websites, such as Free Republic (specifically mentioned in the paper in context of the WaPo and NYT lawsuit).

It then mentions a California startup called "Attributor" which has a means for newspapers to share ad revenue from sites that copy their articles. (Of course, since FR is ad-free, that wouldn't be an impact on this site in particular)

If this updated law is passed, it would have a significant impact on forums that depend upon news content for much of their activity (particularly a place like this, but also other ones, such as Lucianne Goldberg's site)

I wish we didn’t post NYT and WP articles anyway. We shouldn’t give them the time of day.

5 pages of cheese and dairy products. He acknowledges that much of the content is verbatim quotes from the subject.

Is he planning to copyright her answers? But aren’t really his, are they? They are quotations of her remarks.

The article sounded frivolous (as is the job he wrote about).

Meanwhile Houston’s daily paper has a drive through restaurant critic.

The Techdirt blog posts stories and commentary about the internet and its impact on copyright and vice versa. Some of what’s going on is insane, and it specifically mentions the AP’s attempts to use DRM on their stories.

The time is not that far off when they will be trolling here for hits, posting their own articles here and begging freepers to follow their links.

How true. We have to be helping those we link to. I am tired of the dancing monkeys and ads that move to cover up what you are reading, but that is the fair thing to do.

parsy, who has never bought nothing off those irritating ads

If we didn’t post their stuff here, they wouldn’t have any readers.

So true. I think some of them do already...especially MSNBC.

I don't see it on the list, although I've also run into sites that are blocked but not shown.

Right you are. I didn’t know it was a front for the Wilmington News Journal.
