Yolanda Segovia heard a knock on her door one morning, just before 8 a.m.
Her neighbor was on the porch, with a dog and a story.
Stacey Savige had found the little dog in front of an elementary school. He wasn't very big, looked like some sort of terrier. Burrs clung to his belly. His honey fur was caked in mud.
He didn't have a collar. Stacey had taken him to the vet and he didn't have a chip, either.
~snip~On Saturday, Azaiah went to his dad's house. Christian retreated to his room to watch a Barney video. The dog dozed beside him.
Yolanda had just stepped onto her porch to water the plants when the dog flung himself into the screen door, barking madly.
As she opened the door, the dog sprinted across the living room, into the boys' room.
Yolanda screamed. Christian was slumped over, his body writhing in a seizure, blood streaming from his nose and mouth.
The dog ran to the boy, still yelping. But as soon as Yolanda bent to cradle her son, the dog went silent.
"If he hadn't come to get me," Yolanda told Stacey later, "the neurologist said Christian would have choked on his own blood and died."

Dogs know when things just aren’t right.

aw heck, I wasn't even able to finish reading the story out loud to my wife...
Nice to see a "good dog" story for a change here, what with all the "bad dog" stories that are posted these days.

Dogs are awesome. Meanwhile a cat curled up on the back of the family couch for a nap, not to be bothered by all the irritating commotion.

Good dog!
An aside: If health care in this country is so lacking, how is it that this woman has been successfully treated twice for cancer and her son has had heart surgery and some kind of transplant. Clearly they aren’t among the Evil Rich and yet they’ve received some of the best health care on the planet — that being, American health care.

First off, cheers for hero-Odie, not only a dawg that understands he can play rough with the younger boy but must treat the older, bigger one more gently, I've witnessed this kind of thing personally with any number of dawgs. But the behavior when Christian is in trouble, this is not so much a learned thing, there are certain breeds who recognize particular problems, even some mutts who can be service-dawgs.
But really, what a kindness for Randy to have done, it can't have been easy, not to mention his own children ... I hope he gets them another dawg, not to take Odie's place, that could never be, but to ease their pain, someone else to love.
Great piece, thank you for posting it.

Great story.Here is another:
St. Roch was born in France in 1295. When as a young man he heard the plague had reached Italy, he walked from Montpelier to Rome to help the victims. While in Rome, Roch himself caught the plague.Believing he was soon to die, he went into the forest at the edge of the city, built a small hut, and began to pray & prepare himself for death. As he was in prayer a dog came to him holding a piece of bread in his mouth.Roch took the bread from the dog. The dog then licked the plague wounds on Roch's leg, and the wounds were healed.Roch ate the bread and brought back to wholeness by the dog and his gifts,he and the dog returned to Rome, where they worked to heal others and comfort the dying. The story demonstrates the bond between humans and dogs and the power of each to heal & rejuvenate each other.
From an accompanying handout of a statue of St. Roch and his dog made by artist Hank Schlau.
