SYDNEY -- Thousands of camels in Australia's remote Outback could be killed by marksmen in helicopters under a government proposal aimed at cutting down the population of the havoc-wreaking creatures.
First introduced into Australia in the 1840s to help explorers travel through the Australian desert, there are now about 1 million camels roaming the country, with the population doubling every nine years.
They compete with sheep and cattle for food, trample vegetation and invade remote settlements in search of water, scaring residents as they tear apart bathrooms and rip up water pipes.
Last month, the federal government set aside 19 million Australian dollars ($16 million) for a program to help slash the population. Besides sending in sharpshooters in helicopters and on foot, officials are considering proposals to turn some of the creatures into tasty treats such as camel burgers.

Save the Camels.
I’d walk a mile for a...bang...oh forget about it...LOL.
Wait until PETA hears about this.
please do...;-)
I’d want more that the $25 bucks or so they would pay for bounty if I had to bag those things.
I wonder if they would let an old sharpshooter come down and give them a bit of the .303.
Then John Q. Public would have to dig up the guns he buried when Australia outlawed them a few years ago. I heard somewhere that sales of PVC pipe went through the roof.
Dog, Cat or Chinese food potential!
I would love to be the one who got to break the news to them!

Hump backed desert kittens?
Like they should in Alaska for wolf control. Animals shouldn’t be chased down and killed by aircraft. Instead of spending all that money on aircraft and fuel, let people do it on their pocket. There’s enough people out there that want to kill animals to complete this mission.
They still have their rifles, just not semi-autos anymore.
It would be long range bolt-action work work for the most part, which they allowed their serfs to still have for now.
Couldn’t they just put them up on E-Harmony as mail order brides for muslims? That would thin ‘em out fast.
I really enjoy my .303
Camel hide makes great leather, too.
Seems like a win-win situation.
In the Chicagoland area, I wish they would lift the ban on killing Canadian geese. They are like flying rats - certainly not endangered, certainly not migratory any more.
I don’t shoot one over here, although I once had a Martini action that had been customized to shoot the .243x303 round. I would imagine that with restrictions on firearms being what they are down there, it would be better to get an issue rifle and ammo to hunt with.
