Keep an eye on former state controller and multimillionaire Steve Westly - I think he might run for governor again.
Westly spent a lot of money running in 2006 only to lose the Democratic primary to Phil Angelides.
I have got to believe that Westly, and maybe some other Democrats, are not going to allow the primary to just be a two-way race between San Francisco Mayor Gavin Newsom and Attorney General Jerry Brown.
The feeling out there is that Brown probably caps out at 35 to 40 percent with voters while Newsom has yet to break 20 percent. So there is still room for someone new like Westly. A female entry would also probably knock the socks off of everybody.
That was one of the topics I brought up when I had lunch the other day with U.S. Sen. Dianne Feinstein's husband, Richard Blum.
"You know, Richard," I said, "everybody is still talking about Dianne possibly running for governor."
His reply: "You know a commute from here to Sacramento is much easier than a commute from here to Washington."
Hmmmm.
Feinstein isn't the only woman thinking about Sacramento. The other morning Congresswoman Loretta Sanchez was spotted having breakfast at the Hilton. Clearly she was a long way from her Orange County district.

An inside source tells me the White House was not all that happy with former President Bill Clinton being selected to bring the two journalists home from North Korea.
From what I hear, they didn't even want him to come off the plane when it landed for the cameras in Burbank.
The North Koreans, however, had rejected having former President Jimmy Carter make the pickup and former Vice President Al Gore as well. The North Koreans insisted that the only guy who had the credibility ...

What does it mean that brown caps out at b/w 35-40% of the voters? In the dem primary? Hard to win general elections w/40% . Most people I speak with here in CA think moonbeam will be the next gov, as most of the voters were not born when he last held the office. His last stint was SO BAD it lead to 16 yrs of Rep governors.
Thanks. Inside track to be the next Gov? - or just to get the Rep nod? The only poll I saw was a Rass poll that showed her 4 pts behind Brown, but the undecideds were about 20%. Have you seen a newer poll?
A few months ago I spoke briefly with a women in a Costco as I was sampling the foods on sale. The food guy asked me where I was from and about the California governors race. I said under no circumstances should 2some Newsome be governor. The women asked me about Jerry Brown. I said I had met him casually in the course of a job I used to work and was not impressed. She said she had spoken to him as well and said she was very impressed with his intensity and intelligence. I replied Pol Pot and Mao were intelligent and intense as well and walked off. She said who are they and looked confused. Never underestimate the ignorance of the voting public
Wilson was a worse governor than Jerry Brown. Most of the damage to California was done by Willie Brown when he was the leader of the State Assembly.
A local Sacramento radio show host was discussing the Gov race and stated the Dems are scared because the internal polls show Meg Whitman ahead of two Dem front runners Brown and the Newsom. The other Repub candidate named Poisner is neck and neck with them. Whitman is linked to Ebay and it helps.
thanks - source?
Street cop associations endorsed him.
Re: moonbeam. Brown said we needed a communication satellite for the emergency communication network for law enforcement, national guard, firefighters etc. The republicans called him moonbeam and said we don't need a governor with his own space program.
Republican was elected governor and gee, all of a sudden we needed a state satellite.
Yesterday’s LA Times: CALPers fund down 26% over last year same date.
At that time, I was in “law enforcement” and I , too, endorsed him. His judicial picks were not just liberal, they were out of this universe liberal. They were much worse than anything you could imagine. Think Rose Bird, and a host of others.
Brown wasn’t just a disaster, his administration was well beyond that. He was one of the reasons I became a Republican.
Calspurs is located less than a mile from my office and every state workers and UC employees pension took a huge wallop and now these people have to contribute to their pension ! People are very ticked and this clown was incharge !
What does CALPERS’ losses have to do with Jerry Brown not winning the election, so dem fears that he won’t?
When they lost 24% last year it became a burden on the general fund, which has to cover the retirements.
They should return the formulas to the 1998 level and raise some of the ages.
