Death Of Taliban Leader Would Be A U.S. Coup
NPR ^ | August 7, 2009 | Corey Flintoff

Posted on 08/07/2009 3:37:32 PM PDT by myknowledge

Reports from Pakistan say one of the country's most-wanted Taliban leaders is dead — killed by a rocket attack from a U.S. drone.

If confirmed, the death of Baitullah Mehsud could be a significant blow to the Islamist militants linked under his umbrella group, Tehrik-e-Taliban Pakistan.

"There's every indication that it is true," says Daniel Markey, an expert on South Asia at the Council on Foreign Relations. "And it could be quite significant."

Markey says Mehsud was "above all, the face of the Pakistani Taliban, which was becoming a more serious collective organization, one that U.S. officials saw as being more closely tied to foreign fighters and al-Qaida."

How horrifying that they didn’t arrest him, give him his Miranda rights and then bring him home for a fair trial............

Reports said that Mehsud was killed, along with one of his wives and several bodyguards, in a rocket attack on a relative's house in South Waziristan.

I guess it's too late to fire those useless bodyguards.

I wonder if he wouldn’t be happy to have our side think he’s been killed. The fact the might have gotten him says they’re gunning for him. Could be he would rest a lot better at night if his enemies thought he was already dead. Makes it pretty tough to go out in public though.

Frankly I am quite surprised, and just as pleased, that the new administration is letting these attacks go on. I would have expected them to end after inauguration since they aren’t really a message of good cheer for the recipient, and goodness knows we don’t want to offend anyone over there.

This is great, great news if true. I'm no expert but from what I've been reading I thought there was a decent chance this man would end up controlling Pakistan and it's nukes one day.

We’ll just have to wait and see if he returns his Publishers Clearing House entry next time.

Ok after almost 8 years of our Government directed media hysterically whining that “we are only breeding terrorists by killing them” we suddenly now get told by this same state directed media that killing terrorists is a good thing?

Hmm and what changed between now and the last 8 years that accounts for this 180 degree turn in propaganda spin from Government directed media?

Really not much different than what Cheney had proposed with the CIA. Now that a dem is in office the media thinks this is fine....

If he is dead, it will give Obambi a whole new round of apologies to fulfill. He’ll have to prostrate himself in front of our sworn enemies and beg their forgiveness. How could such a horror happen??? He will have to atone for this by sacrificing a few more of our Marines, and don’t think he won’t. Lost 5 today, I think. But wait — there’s more. That will make our enemies happy.

Um, we’ve been killing Taliban and Al Qaeda for eight years, and this is the first time NPR notices?

I’m glad the guy is dead. However, we all know that if he was killed on Bush’s watch, NPR would be whining about it stoking the cycle of violence.

NPR was specifically talking about the death of the Taliban leader, hence the reason why I posted this article in the first place.

Targeting this guy was an assasination. Isn’t that what the Dems were frothing at the mouth over? Wanting to prosecute Bush because the CIA had a plan to target terrorists? And they still want to jail Bush and Cheney for pouring water up a terrorists nose but applaude Obama for blowing this guy to smithereens. I think the plan was put into effect but with drones instead of shooters. I don’t think Predators can find these guys by themselves. We must have covert operators on the ground over there. Probably CIA spooks.
