Noonan: ‘You Are Terrifying Us’
WSJ ^ | 8/7/2009 | Peggy Noonan

Posted on 08/07/2009 5:24:37 AM PDT by markomalley

We have entered uncharted territory in the fight over national health care. There’s a new tone in the debate, and it’s ugly. At the moment the Democrats are looking like something they haven’t looked like in years, and that is: desperate.

They must know at this point they should not have pushed a national health-care plan. A Democratic operative the other day called it “Hillary’s revenge.” When Mrs. Clinton started losing to Barack Obama in the primaries 18 months ago, she began to give new and sharper emphasis to her health-care plan. Mr. Obama responded by talking about his health-care vision. He won. Now he would push what he had been forced to highlight: Health care would be a priority initiative. The net result is falling support for his leadership on the issue, falling personal polls, and the angry town-hall meetings that have electrified YouTube.

In his first five months in office, Mr. Obama had racked up big wins—the stimulus, children’s health insurance, House approval of cap-and-trade. But he stayed too long at the hot table. All the Democrats in Washington did. They overinterpreted the meaning of the 2008 election, and didn’t fully take into account how the great recession changed the national mood and atmosphere.

And so the shock on the faces of Congressmen who’ve faced the grillings back home. And really, their shock is the first thing you see in the videos. They had no idea how people were feeling. Their 2008 win left them thinking an election that had been shaped by anti-Bush, anti-Republican, and pro-change feeling was really a mandate without context; they thought that in the middle of a historic recession featuring horrific deficits, they could assume support for the invention of a huge new entitlement carrying huge new costs.

Next Parker column:

Southern GOP Klansmen draw swords in attempt to deny Yankee kids Band-Aids for their skinned knees.

It is puzzling how some folks are only now seeing the perils of a liberal government.

Looks like the Brie and Chablis repubs are starting to get it. Too Little Too Late comes to mind.

Pray for America and Gov Palin

So has old Peg wet her finger and put it in the air?

If Palin speaks up, then next week’s column will no doubt pound on Sarah.

Noonan can pound sand. She is dead to me.

“And frankly they ought to think about backing off. The president should call in his troops and his Congress and announce a rethinking. There are too many different bills, they’re all a thousand pages long, no one has time to read them, no one knows what’s going to be in the final one, the public is agitated, the nation’s in crisis, the timing is wrong, we’ll turn to it again—but not now. We’ll take a little longer, ponder every aspect, and make clear every complication.”

The ‘big mic’ did exactly the opposite. He sent the troops out to shut down the opposition with his ‘pep talk’ yesterday.

The ‘big mic’ had better wake up. This is what happens when you elect someone who only has experience making speeches. It’s like trying to survive off of chocolate cake. It’s nice in the beginning, but in the end you realize it just can’t sustain you.

If our Pipsqueak in Chief wants to compile a Dissidents Database let me be the first to volunteer.

It would be my pleasure and honor to be identified as an opponent of these Bolsheviks. I would love to compile a list and send it along to these squirts with the challenge: Bring it On!

Anybody else in?

That’s actually the *least* attractive pic of Palin I’ve seen... makes her look like Wynonna Judd.

I concur. Let's use this one instead:

Ms. Noonan’s head has been up the ass of Romney,
supporting HIS socialized medicine.

Ms. Noonan is responsible for socialized medicine.

Yeah, but they have that suave, cosmopolitan, well-spoken Harvard guy in there the Vichy Republicans preferred over Palin. Heck, at least he's not vulgar, right? When he makes the move toward End of Life counseling, global abortion funding, and depopulation. And he reads - and actually understands - the smug articles in The New Yorker while pronouncing arugula without a twangy accent.

In the end, it was always going to come down to the estrogen test on this one. Her results are in now, how about Chris Buckley's?

Well, yes, they ought to do that, or better yet, call the whole thing off entirely. The problem with that is that the President’s supporters, and the current Congressional majority, and the President himself are, as Ms. Noonan once said less aptly of another politician, a ponder-free zone.

Anyone have that photo of Palin in khaki Levi's in a forest surrounded by pines?

We were taking bets on how long the honeymoon would last on this one back during the "vulgar" narrative.

Peg, I truly hope you are waking up. I used to love your columns - terrific analyses, wonderful use of vocabulary, strongly patriotic. And then, Huh?? Unlike many on this forum, I am more than willing to forgive IF you are coming back. So many people were taken in bu 0’s persona, rhetoric and the whole “first black president” thing that they simply, literally, ignored 0’s lifelong associations and actions. And we are all paying the price.

“They are mocking and menacing concerned citizens. This only makes a hot situation hotter. Is this what the president wants? It couldn’t be.”

She’s still an idiot. Of course... this is EXACTLY what the president wants!! That’s what community organizers DO!

In fairness to Peggy she ended up voting for McCain, IIRC.

OTOH, she seems to put far more stock in appearance over character and style over substance than a thinking person should.

I saw 0's flaws way back when he denied hearing the bigotry spewed by Rev. "White Ain't" Wright. You would have thought that might have raised a red flag.

Soon they will call out the troops: ACORN, SEIU, ANSWER, Rainbow/PUSH, ThinkProgress, La Raza, and hundreds of organizations you've probably never heard of, but which are linked through an intricate network of leftist activism, and funded by multi-billion dollar foundations like Tides, MacArthur, Pew, and Carnegie.

Please see David Horowitz' Discover the Networks site for more details.
