California bans threatening noose displays

Thursday, August 6, 2009

California law already bans threatening displays of swastikas or burning crosses. Now add nooses to the list.

On Thursday, Gov. Arnold Schwarzenegger signed legislation making such displays punishable by up to a year in jail and a fine of up to $5,000.

The bill by Democratic Assemblywoman Wilma Carter of Rialto would make it a misdemeanor to hang a noose on someone else's property or at a school or workplace.

She introduced the bill after noose hangings were displayed in several Halloween decorations last year. Two such displays were effigies of then-Democratic presidential candidate Barack Obama and GOP vice presidential candidate Sarah Palin.

The law, which takes effect Jan. 1, will not ban displays by a homeowner, which are considered constitutionally protected speech.

It would make a fun silk-screened necktie.

Sorry, misread your post. I misread your first line as "It didn’t say anything about other’s property."

Nevermind!

>>> The bill by Democratic Assemblywoman Wilma Carter of Rialto would make it a misdemeanor to hang a noose on someone else’s property or at a school or workplace.

Title of the thread says that the display of nooses is now illegal in California.

Certainly I don’t agree that one should have the right to violate another person’s property. Why did they have to make a law about nooses over that??? The law should already be on the books... Tresspass at the very least, and hate speech at best. One shouldn’t have the right to place campaign signs or even a coke can on someone else’s property either... It’s not their property!

Consider what the new law is stating about those who are not even inclined to do such a thing!

It’s like saying “All white people are racists” with the damb law!

oops... sorry... didn’t see your post in time.
I’m more ticked off at what the law is saying... not
your misunderstanding of what I was saying.

I guess the Haunted Mansion Ride at Disneyland will be closed for renovations really soon.

Insanity, it’s the new Coke.

...up to a year in jail...

ROTFL!!! Yeah Right! The "judges" over there are turning 'em loose as fast as they can put 'em in. What a bunch of moronic fools.

Duly noted. I probably zeroed in too much on the property aspect.

We in California REALLY NEED to go back to a part time legislature. These ignoramii have way too much time. Way too much.

Okay this is why I despise Schwarzenegger. The fact that he would sign a bill like this reveals something about the man. The fool cannot seem to understand the principal involved in this and how it is a threat to freedom. I've seen a lot of parodies involving a noose in my lifetime. It doesn't necessarily mean violence. Sometimes it is symbolic.

One big question? Where's the damn ACLU when you need them? This should be the type of thing they would oppose.

The legislators who voted for this are aholes. The governor who signed it is also a ahole.
