Nobody captured Christmas in films like Hughes did...With one glaring exception, to my eyes anyway.... The Christmas choir assembly in the church sanctuary in Home Alone I, where the members in the choir outnumber those in attendance by a ratio of at least 5 to 1, is disappointing. YouTube video of the scene.
Nevertheless, his movies are among my favorites. Condolences to his family.

That's a good one. I liked Chet(?), the evil brother. "How would you like a greasy pork chop served in an ashtray?"
My personal favorite Hughes films are: Planes, Trains and Automobiles
Sixteen Candles
The Breakfast Club
They should play the Simple Minds tune from The Breakfast Club at his funeral.

A lot of people hate this hat. It angers a lot of people, just the sight of it. Ah, I'll tell you a story about that on the way to school. LOLOL!!
I love that movie. It's second only to Ferris Bueller. I can watch them both over and over.

That wasn’t the mass..that was the rehersal for midnight mass...rest easy...pay attention to the scene...the grandfather is there only because the father isn’t there and will be there for the later mass. ;)
All is well!

John Hughes is not a normal person. Hes an extraordinary genius. I mean hes not like your normal self-involved, self-impressed, wildly self-praising Hollywood screenwriter. Hes a genius. -- Ben Stein

I found a couple of things with a quick search. Here’s one:
“These were typical of my experiences as a Republican in Hollywood,” said [Ben] Stein. “But it changed considerably when I became an actor. The first work I did of any significance was for John Hughes, who is an avid Republican and a great guy. He put me in Ferris Bueller’s Day Off. My career got off and running.”

That’s what I remembered. Rehersal. It’s a hot August, but that performance is giving me chills.

She was so adorable in that movie. “Well, with your bad knees, Ed, you shouldn’t be throwing anybody!”
I saw John Hughes once at Whole Foods. Seriously. I couldn’t figure out why he was at my Whole Foods, but I guess he had an actual farm and Whole Food buys a lot of local produce, milk, etc.

That wasnt the mass..that was the rehersal for midnight mass...rest easy...pay attention to the scene...the grandfather is there only because the father isnt there and will be there for the later mass. ;)Well, that's even worse. Only in the screenwriter's world would a Scrooge-like choir director subject his/her young singers to a late evening Christmas Eve rehearsal, hours before the actual Midnight Mass. Seriously, if you don't know your vocal parts by 8pm Christmas Eve - it's not like cramming for a final exam.... LOL.

I want to know why John Candy/Uncle Buck was a Dem, then. He has a Dukakis sticker in his apartment (I’ll never forget my Dem pals going “right on” when they saw that in the theater).
Of course, Buck WAS a ne’er-do-well loser. But too good-hearted.
