An Oregon congressman says he wants to test having a government GPS unit in every car so a tax could be imposed on the miles driven.
The proposal, H.R. 3311, which calls for a test project costing $150 million-plus, was introduced by Rep. Earl Blumenauer, D-Ore.
"Oregon has successfully tested a Vehicle Miles Traveled fee, and it is time to expand and test the VMT program across the country," he said in a statement on his website. "A VMT system can better assess fees based on use of our roads and bridges, as well as during times of peak congestion, than a fee based on fuel consumption.
"It is time to get creative and find smart ways to rebuild and renew America's deteriorating infrastructure," he said.
His plan calls for the Department of the Treasury to study the idea with test GPS-equipped car projects in every state.

Why would you need a GPS to accomplish that little feat? I suspect every state has a vehicle inspection procedure at which time the odometer reading could be recorded, the tax fee calculated and paid to the inspection station who would then transmit it to the gov’t collectors.
The only need for GPS is for info over and beyond miles driven annually.
i bet this ass has a giant peewee herman poster on his office wall
Every Freeper needs to call his Portland office. I just did.
Give this bow tie wearin’ tree huggin’ clown hell.
The number is: 503-231-2300.
You need to tell the clerk who answers the bill number, she was pretty clueless.
Wives are gonna love it.
Honey you said you were at the gym, the gps tracking website showed you at the local strip joint.
It’s already done for teenagers, not much of a stretch to have it for everyone.
Safety via surveillance will be the sizzle.
thanks
If this a$$hole succeeds in getting one in my car, it will mysteriously fail to function.
“How in the name of God could ANYONE vote for this creepy little vermin?”
He’s a politician in Oregon who had a (D) after his name. Sad as it is - that’s how.
Sure. First it’s to save energy. Then it’s to record your movements and keep a permanent record, so that it can be checked against your tax return. Then it’s to see if you were anywhere near the scene of a crime. Then it’s whatever the government wants to use it for.
Stop it now.
tinfoil.....lots and lots and lots of tinfoil......
I quit questioning it, I KNOW there aren’t any. The few who would be don’t last there. The ones currently in power are there to tip this country into socialism, the rest are there for what spoils they can get for going with the program, if if they make a faint noise here and there pretending to be the “opposition”. We The People are on our own.
We need to flood the flag@whitehouse.gov in box. I just dropped these Marxist clowns a note.

No doubt!
Right after they get my guns!!!
Is there room with his head already occupying that coveted space?
Indeed, this is something that aluminum foil could truly fix. Just shield the antenna from the sky. (actually, in the case of GPS, you could probably shield it with a piece of wood properly placed).
I just did and even with some relaxed standards here, I would not try and post a copy of my message to this Fascist A-Hole as I doubt it would get pass the mods. lol
I’ve never been able to find them, but I strongly suspect my wife has had one of those buggers on all my cars since at least 1986.
