how on earth can a someone of portuguese descent be considered hispanic? they don’t even speak spanish!

Spanish and portugeses Jews are one community. They were interchangeble and after the expulsion lived as one. They were one community before thre was a distinction among gentile hispanics between catalonians, portugese and spanish.
By your logic Maimonides wasn’t spanish but grenadian.
Besides there is no evidence that Cardozo was Portugese not spanish

I think this refers to Latin Americans; Brazilians (mostly Portuguese descent) are usually lumped in with “Hispanics” or the more generic “Latinos.”

The point is that European Spaniards or Portuguese are not the “right kind” of Latins. The “right kind” must be leftwing, preferably dark-skinned (although Sotomayor is not) to indicate Indian or black blood instead of that ugly European background, and carry their Dem party card in their teeth at all times.
