Several weeks ago, I wrote an essay here called "It's not time yet, but . . . ." This was in reference to the burgeoning Tea Parties, and I argued that a sentiment was bubbling up that at some point would absolutely explode in rage and reaction against the government. My thought then was that the best course of action would be an "unannounced" and "unplanned" planned protest where millions (and it would absolutely have to be millions) of Americans descended on Washington without parade or speech permits; drove clunkers and abandoned them on the highways and completely tied up all access in or out (forcing the media to cover the event), and just milled around in groups that "happened" to coalesce around speakers. Only in that way, I thought, could you a) ensure that the Capitol police did not deny marching permits or otherwise sequester the representatives and b) guarantee the state-run media would have to cover the event.
I still don't know if that's possible, but gang, we are rapidly running out of options and soon something as radical as that will have to be done. Don't want to be a doom and gloomer, but some of you are putting your hopes in a GOP comeback, perhaps even re-taking the House and capturing some senate seats in 2010.
I think it's going to be too late by then.
Obama's strategy has been an FDR/100 Days approach: rush to get the programs in place, and once in place, the bureaucracy/momentum will be such that they will be impossible to repeal. After a year or two, the masses will lose their emotional energy, and slowly Obama's poll numbers will crawl back.
I'm increasingly convinced, though, he doesn't care if he's reelected, and he doesn't care about polls, and he sure doesn't care about "town meetings" or "tea parties" or any other expression of popular will. Like Louis, HE IS THE STATE.
I don't think the "blue dogs" matter a whit. Most, if not all, will cave. But even if they don't, an only slightly watered down version of health (non) care will pass, followed by amnesty for the illegals. Even if by then the polling is 60/40 against among former citizens, the Dems will have made up the difference in sheer numbers of new voters.
But based on the actions of our OH guys, of some of the other congressmen, of Voinovich, they are simply NOT going to listen to ANY constituents---even Dems! Their view is, "This is good for you, and even if you don't agree, you'll come around in a year or two." I think Rahm is counting on losing a bunch of seats, but it won't matter. The Doomsday Machine is going to be in place.
So the question becomes, "Then what?" Rush has pointed out, this crowd wants violence from the opposition (even if it's a growing or even dominant majority). O wants to paint opponents as radical Brownshirts.
History tells us that whether it's King George in 1775, King Louis in 1789, or Czar Nicholas in 1917, the masses are ignored at your own peril. But this isn't 1775 or 1789 or 1917, and Big Brother has a vast spy network at his disposal with a media/propaganda arm such as the Stalinists would have been proud. The utter absence of a history of military coups---even military opposition---to the elected government in this country suggests that it would be unwise to expect support from that sector.
It's getting bleak folks, and I increasingly see these anti-Obama elections in DE, VA, NJ, and plummeting Obama poll numbers in OH and elsewhere not as the good news it should be but as a warning that perhaps the system isn't working any more. Let's hope I'm wrong.
I gotta agree. These are not people acting as if they plan to face another election.
Democrats should be asking themselves, who stands between THEM and the pitchforks?
One if by land
Two if by sea
Three if by Government
Three Lanterns
Ugh. I was hoping someone could see a flaw in my argument.
Beauteous.
I agreed with your first essay and I completely agree with this one. Too bad no one seems to be listening.
” Democrats should be asking themselves, who stands between THEM and the pitchforks? “
Broaden that to ‘The Elected Elites should be asking themselves...’
This needs to grow beyond Parties and Partisanship - the System, itself, is what’s broken, no matter who nominally holds the tiller....
LOL! Of course they do not plan on facing another election! Certainly not a "free and fair" type nor the phony fraud type election they pulled off last year.
Why? One word -- ACORN!
WAKE UP AMERICA!
I said on Nov 5 that zero will be the last president that the United States of America elects. Interprt my statement any way you want to. Will zero suspend the Constitution and rule as dictator or will the conservative states secede and go their way? Its going to be a very bumpy ride either way....red
Funny you should use those lyrics. When the “Who” played Woodstock, Abbie Hoffman, thinking it was a “political” event, jumped on stage and grabbed the microphone to harangue the crowd. Pete Townshend took off his guitar and smashed him over the head. They carried Hoffman off the stage as Townshend raged, “Get off my f-ing stage!”
Ok, but other than shouting “Wake up America,” exactly what action do you see taking place? That was sort of the purpose of the post. The people have “woken up,” but woken up to what?
Don't be silly. Americans do not have the guts to confront them, let alone with pitchforks. Making phone calls and writing letters from the comfort of the couch in their own homes is not confronting anyone.
If we see a MILLION in DC on September 12th, I will be happy to offer my apology to the American people.
9/11 in DC.
Block every street into and out of the Capital complex.
Don’t bother with the white house.
Perhaps a pelosi sit in.
Any other ideas ?
Elections?
You mean like back in the days when America still had a Constitution?
I don’t think you are wrong. We are witnessing the Gathering Storm.
I’ve been thinking a lot of the same thoughts. I doubt that there will even be an election in 2010, and even if there is, it won’t be a fair one. Therefore, it won’t be an election.
Do you believe that we should continue to show up at speaking events, that we should continue to protest and ask questions. What are our choices now?
I’m not sure. My dad fought this fight from the 50’s until he died in February. But he did it quietly, from behind the scenes with financial support and trying to educate those around him. The fact that some of his children and grandchildren helped elect Obama helped kill him early. I’m convinced of that.
I’m trying to get others to join me at the only “event” held by our Representative, but so far I have more “can’t make it” than “I’ll be there” responses. I don’t know what else to do, but to continue to pray.
What amazes me most is that this is all happening right before our very eyes - we are living it - who would have ever thought this could happen in America? Furthermore - what does this say to our enemies - the dictators - around the world. I bet their laughing their asses off at us.
I have to wonder at what point do we all say to hell with work for a day and take to the streets in protest? How is it the Mexican American movement can gather every “Cinco De Mayo” in large groups and such and we can’t? I know, I know, because we value hard work and providing for our families - however, we must come to a point where enough is enough.
