NEW YORK — It's still early, but analysts' grades already are coming in: the back-to-school shopping season is off to a lousy start.

"Back-to-school selling hasn't really started yet," said John Morris, BMO Capital Markets analyst, based on recent conversations he's had with store executives. "Retailers have a very foggy picture."

If you don't usually pay attention to back to school sales, like me, pay attention this year. For me, all bets on the green shoots and recovery are off until I see Christmas. Back to school is like a warm up act for Christmas, and it isn't going good yet.

Hmmm... maybe prices for such things might drop. Too bad people don’t stop buying food, the price for that is still climbing here.

I have to tell you there are not real deals out there.

When you have more than one child and they each need six one inch binders (not the flimsy ones) and other things, it gets really expensive. I ended up going to the 99 cent store for those.

Not good. Folks need real jobs and more take home pay. The kind of economics Obama/Reid/Pelosi know nothing about.

Well in my opinion, it doesn’t do much good to put things out like sweaters and jackets and warm clothing in the middle of July when the temperature is in the 100’s - such as how it is at Walmart here in Central Texas. I am always appalled to see that crap in the summer time when it’s so hot. Who in the world is thinking about a coat in July in Texas? Maybe if retailers would re-think putting out seasonal clothing an entire season ahead of time, they might have a better turn-out.

And then too, so much of the clothing for kids, especially girls/women nowadays are so raunchy, who would want to buy it anyway? And for the boys, most of what is available looks like they slept in the clothes or wore them out ahead of time. Senseless.

Concur - but then I also think it’s an abomination to have Xmas stuff up prior to the first day after Thanksgiving, Thanksgiving stuff prior to Haloween, Haloween stuff prior to 1 Oct, Valentines stuff prior to 1 Feb, or Easter stuff prior to the 1st of the month in which it falls (Mar/Apr).

Oh and 4th of July stuff should be up all year round instead of just June.

I've always thought that a store could make a killing selling -- I know this will sound crazy! -- selling swimsuits in the summer and sweaters and coats in the winter.

But since I've never seen anyone actually stock their inventory like that, I suppose there's got to be a reason.

I agree. I don’t even get in the Christmas Spirit until after Thanksgiving.
