Today the GOP finds itself in the enviable position of being the "inactive opposition." They can sit back and watch the Democrats shoot themselves in the foot -- repeatedly. There's no reason to say how you'd "run things differently" when things are going this badly -- mainly because they probably don't have any ideas right now.

Two important things to remember about 1994 . . . (1) the GOP was dealing with someone who was already an unpopular president (Clinton was elected with 43% of the popular vote and never would have won without Ross Perot); and (2) there was a lot of margin for flexibility in key aspects of the economy back then, particularly with regard to tax policy (I'm not sure there's much room for any changes here, since cutting tax rates from their relatively low levels probably isn't going to do much).

The Republican Party has no reason to come up with any "big ideas" yet. It's a long way until November 2010, and a lot can happen in the meantime.

You're so right. The GOP's refusal to stand up while our nation is being destroyed is really just a brilliant strategy.

The hell it wouldn't. Cut corporate taxes by 50%, eliminate capital gains taxes and the death taxes, plus pledge to make the Bush tax cuts permanent. The economy would respond!

And, while there would still be a deficit, it would be smaller by far than the trillion dollar-plus deficit currently projected.

There is always room to cut taxes!
And spending!
