Guantanamo Bay inmates may be moved to single US mainland complex
Times Online (U.K.) ^ | August 4, 2009 | Tim Reid

President Obama’s pledge to shut Guantánamo Bay appeared beset by confusion last night with the emergence of conflicting plans over how to close the prison.

Under one leaked proposal the Administration is considering a transfer of all 229 detainees to a single complex on the US mainland. Officials said two sites being looked at for such a military-civilian prison, where terror suspects would be tried, were the military jail at Fort Leavenworth, Kansas, and a soon-to-be-closed maximum security facility in Standish, Michigan.

However, officials at the US Justice Department said last night that dozens of detainees had been referred to federal prosecutors for possible criminal trials in Washington, directly contradicting the plan to try them at a prison-courtroom complex.

The clash in ideas appears to reflect a level of dysfunction in how the challenge to shut Guantánamo is being approached, less than six-months from Mr Obama’s self-imposed deadline to close it.

The task force’s deliberations were fed to the media in part to test reaction. It has been far from positive, showing again how fierce the resistance is to the idea of closing the prison at the US naval base on Cuba, both in Congress and among the wider public.

Sam Brownback, a Republican senator from Kansas, held a news conference at Leavenworth, attended by 50 community leaders, to declare: “We don’t want them here.”

In an earlier radio interview, he said: “The issue is being able to keep the terrorists from coming into this place. This is the time to speak out and be heard.”

Earlier still, he said in a statement: “It makes no sense to spend millions and millions of dollars to build what we already have at Guantánamo. This is a bad idea chasing another bad idea on a hurry-up timeline.”

A spokeswoman for John Boehner,

Love how they are looking at RED states mainly. Put ‘em in Illinois or right in the center of NYC or WEST LA.

This is interesting. The courtroom and the jail/prison will be on one site.

Look here, that’s too close to me. Now if they opened the doors of the plane and shoved them all out on the trip that might be acceptable.

Missouri, Nebraska and Iowa are all REAL close to Leavenworth, take a look at a map!

I think this will help several races, if Obama does this.

We do have one lib Dem member of Congress in KC KS area, this can not help him. Leavenworth is not in Dennis Moore's 3rd District, but this will sure not help him!

To sum up this article, Obama and Holder and Axelrod and the rest of the commies don’t know what the heck they are doing.

Maybe they should move them to the 57th state that Obama wants to visit.

What's wrong with having the court/detention where they are in Gitmo?

The last place they need to go is Michiganistan.

How fitting. In the heart of islam country.

I’ve said it before and I’ll keep saying it .. “the bombing begins in 5 mintues”. We need to pray for the innocent people who live near those prisons .. and the guards (and their families) who will be put in direct danger.

This is a most horrible idea - bringing these murderers to this country.

What about using the Yucca Mountain nuclear waste repository now that Obama and Harry Reid have shut it down?

There are lots of dangerous, terrible people in our prisons already. The small towns where many of our maximum security prisons are found still fight over who gets to house them, especially now, with unemployment so high. I think they are perfectly capable of keeping any kind of criminal safely locked away.

Besides, I like the idea of these Muslim terrorists being sent to a typical U.S. maximum security prison. They were complaining about Gitmo. They’ve got no idea. They’re going to get a welcome like they won’t believe.

I think you missed my point.

All over this country there are terrorist groups - who try to portray themselves as a simple community of people who worship Islam.

These are really home-grown terrorists and they can and will do whatever they choose - to the people who surround those prisons - in order to secure release of those terrorists from the prison. That’s why I said, “the bombing begins in 5 minutes”.

Sadly, most of the people who live in the area closest to the prison just happen to be the families of the guards at the prison. These people will make great hostages.

Now do you see my point ..??
