Health Reform Demands That Lawmakers Read the Bills
US News & World Report ^ | August 3, 2009 | By Bernadine Healy, M.D.

Congress has agreed to step away from its promise to pass expansive health bills before its August recess as the president wanted. It would have bordered on legislative malpractice for the House to have rushed to pass its bill last week as its leadership hoped to do, considering that most members still have not read the 1,017-pager.

Here are just four things that promise to radically change some people's health experiences—and everyone's relationship with the government—even if you are now among the happily insured.

1. Health choices commissioner.

2. Health Benefits Advisory Committee.

3. Federal penalties.

4. Money from the young and the old.

Before they [lawmakers] cast what will be historic votes expected in the fall, I'd suggest that each member take a proctored, multiple-choice test on these bills, with their grades posted on the Web. Those who flunk, step aside.

Requiring that they read the bills is a good start but it misses the root of the problem.

Even the most complicated bill should never be more than a few hundred pages long. These bills are intentionally overcomplicated both as a means of hiding goodies for congressclunkers and friends, and as a means of keeping Americans in the dark about what is really there.

Arlen Sphincter is out saying how this decision must be made quickly (why?) and is all for it, yet the Senate version of the bill hasn’t even been written!

Kids out of high school paying for health insurance, or else? What happens when people don’t pay their fines? Go to jail, along with the others who don’t pay their taxes? This leaves me incredulous. Yeah, you try to make some kid working at Star Bucks going to college, or not, pay this. Good luck.

Health Insurance legislative reading??

Who cares, as we get a chance to read it in August!

Cap and Tax?? No-one, absolutely no-one, ever, no-one has ever read this monstrocity before Pelosi’s House voted on it.

No-one, ever. Yet it is a Communist transformative document that will make the US even more non-competitive in the world, while doing absolutely nothing to solve the so called human based global warming.

Al Gore are you listening?? You should be treated as a traitor to the world!
