Aug. 3, 2009 | Is Sarah Palin America's Mahmoud Ahmadinejad? The two differ in many key respects, of course, but it is remarkable how similar they are. There are uncanny parallels in their biographies, their domestic politics and the way they present themselves -- even in their rocky relationships with party elders.
Both are former governors of a northwest frontier state with great natural beauty (in Ahmadinejad's case, Ardabil). Both are known for saying things that produce a classic Scooby-Doo double take in their audiences. Both appeal to a sort of wounded nationalism, speaking of the sacrifice of dedicated troops for an often feckless public, and identifying themselves with the common soldier. They are vigilant against foreign designs on their countries and insist on energy and other independence.
But above all, both are populists who claim to represent the little people against wily and unscrupulous elites, and against pampered upper-middle-class yuppies pretending to be the voice of democracy. Together, they tell us something about dangerous competing populisms in an age of globalization.

Naomi Wolfe has already done the Evita Peron comparison. Remember her on Fox calling Governor Palin an Evita-like Barbie Doll!
Surely even Salon has some minimum expectation that its contributors should at least do some elementary homework. How could anyone with an ounce of intelligence believe that the Mullahs of Iran would tolerate a woman like Governor Sarah Palin in any position of authority whatsoever. Can anyone imagine someone like Ahmadinejad (a) fighting for liberal liqour laws, as Governor Palin did in Alaska, (b) vetoing a legislative attempt to reduce the acquired rights of Gay couples, as Governor Palin did in Alaska and (c) publishing the most ambitious plan for green renewable energy of any state in the world.
And that is just a few examples, which demonstate just how ignorant Mr Cole actually is.

Damn! Another example of humor being beat out by reality.
Hmm, if Sarah was so much like Mahmoud, you’d think Obama would be much more respectful/supportive of her.
There is a very old (author disputed) quote that fits this nitwit Juan Cole perfectly:
“Whom the gods would destroy, they first make mad”
Maybe the liberal’s better watch out. PDS is like the bubonic plague — it first arrives via rats and then spreads to all who have frequent contact with rats.
In the time of the black death the victims thought they were doomed because of their misdeeds. Maybe PDS works the same way.......
>Wrong. This is an internet legend that has been posted often. Barack Obama’s father is a Luo, a BLACK Kenyan ethnic group that did not do much intermixing with the Arab traders.
I know that Kenneth Lamb is the source of that notion. What do you know or think of him?
>You do know that Arabs are “caucasians”, right?
For the most part. However, the Arabs who settled the East Africa coast intermingled with the native Swahili Bantu people, if I’m not mistaken.
Juan Cole, meet Joseph Goebbels. Let me count the ways.
Among other things it’s total bad faith by Cole, who has made a career of apologetics for radical Islam. Now all of a sudden he wants to diminish Palin by comparing her to...radical Muslims.
Whoops! For a moment there I thought this was about Juan McCahole....
Hmmm! If memory serves me (going back to the late 20th century) looking at this picture....could he be a brother of Eschoir?
You are correct....except, IMHO, for one small addition.
Islam = a religion, only 15-20% of whose members are ethnic Arabs and 15-20% of whose members are peace-loving individuals.. The largest majority Muslim nation, btw, is Indonesia.
You are, of course, welcome...:)
Context is difficult on the Internet, and I often will take a link to a website, but am unable to determine immediately the politics of the site. You sometimes have to be a visitor to that site over a period of time, because even a site like Townhall will have a liberal opinion piece there, sometimes more than a few over time.
That is where the Power Of Freep comes in...:)
The "Afro-Arabs" are indeed mixed, and are Arab is language only, in many cases. This is commented on by folks such as VS Naipaul and other observers of the continent. Barack Sr. was a Luo, however, and they tended to remain culturally/racially homogeneous.
Salon, meet Pravda.
It’s sad when you have to tell lies to get noticed.
