NEW YORK - A private-sector measure of U.S. manufacturing activity declined last month at the slowest pace since August. Production jumped to its highest level in more than two years as manufacturers worked to restock customers' bare shelves, another sign that the recession may soon be over.

I think they mean last August.

However, a more accurate indicator is the Baltic shipping index anywise. And it’s been languishing.

“U.S. manufacturing activity DECLINED last month at the slowest pace...”

The keyword is in bold. More lipstick on the pig!

Don’t bet on it.

Harley is shutting down a lot of production for the 4th quarter and a number of ag machinery producers up in this area have very little on the books for the 4th. Steel prices were shooting up significantly as of today due to raw material surcharges (around .7/lb).

Companies will have more than enough steel for the rest of their current orders on the books. We enjoyed a good last 2 weeks of July, but know full well the month of August will be TERRIBLE.

August timeframe may start killing off a lot of the smaller (see small business) manufacturers. Can’t get credit for material and can’t get their customers to pay on time much less want to order anything more than they need.

Not too optimistic about a recovery by this time NEXT year.

I guess we’ll see.

That story is pure bullshit. We are headed, not only for a depression, but for a famine and national bankruptcy.

Thanks to the voters who put obama and the Democrats in power.

Notice that I did not refer to them as Americans.

Unspinning the Orwellian econospeak, the US economy declined year over year, and is still declining month over month, but we’re back to August, ‘08 levels of contraction, which is not as bad as it has been between now and then.

I remember years ago listening to the "News" on Radio Moscow short wave. They always lauded the successes of their 5 year plans, harvests, tractor production, you name it. It was an absolute joke to listen to. Same here. Spin it to the max.

Good news, people! We’re still sinking, just not as fast as we were a few months ago. Water’s still pouring in, just not as fast...

Err, first of all, what is this this alleged “US manufacturing” that you are talking about?

So little is actually made in the US now, that a change one way or the other shouldn’t be used as a measuring stick for anything.

Sweet. Another green shoot.

Now if the gov can just raise our taxes some more and build some windmills and take over healthcare the economy will roar back to life.
