Is that an mg 44 that Kraut is holding? Best MG ever produced in WW2 and I guess it still may be.

It’s an H&K MG3, a direct descendant of the World War II MG42. One of the finest infantry support weapons ever made, and oddly, one of the reasons that the Wehrmacht never widely adopted a semi-automatic rifle like the M1 Garand. Up until the end of the war, German riflemen were still mostly using the old Mauser K98k bolt-action five-shot rifle. But because the Wehrmacht built their small unit tactics around the machine-gun section, and had many more of them than comparative American units with BARs, they actually had a significant firepower advantage in many engagements.

When I was in Germany, '59-'62, the Germans had some impressive full auto small arms(based on their WWII designs). Far superior the our M1s, which were still in use at that time, and superior to our M14s, which we finally obtained about '60.

They used to come onto our base several times a year and demonstrate, with blanks, what they could do. They were absolutely friendly and most of them spoke english and would answer any question we put to them.

Hopefully they are doing a professional job in Afghanistan now that we can't shoot back!

I don’t care what the German soldiers use. I just want them to kill the Taliban bastards.
