WASHINGTON - The Obama administration is looking at creating a courtroom-within-a-prison complex in the U.S. to house suspected terrorists, combining military and civilian detention facilities at a single maximum-security prison.

Several senior U.S. officials said the administration is eyeing a soon-to-be-shuttered state maximum security prison in Michigan and the 134-year-old military penitentiary at Fort Leavenworth, Kan., as possible locations for a heavily guarded site to hold the 229 suspected al-Qaida, Taliban and foreign fighters now jailed at the Guantanamo Bay detention camp in Cuba.

The officials outlined the plans the latest effort to comply with President Barack Obama's order to close the prison camp by Jan. 22, 2010, and satisfy congressional and public fears about incarcerating terror suspects on American soil on condition of anonymity because the options are under review.

This is going to be tough to do at Leavenworth. The old Disciplinary Barracks has been torn down with a few of the administrative buildings converted to other uses. A brand new Disciplinary Barracks has been built, but its for military prisoners and is near capacity. It can only house a small number of maximum security prisoners.

So, to use Leavenworth, they would have to build an entirely new facility with all of the security apparatus that needs to go with it. Not going to happen by Jan, 2010.

As the article mentions, the community is dead set against this, but since both our Senators and our Congressman are Republicans, this would be a good way for Obama to stick it to the Conservatives.

I just can't get past this part of the brain failure. If we bring these dudes into this country we will have to give them a trial, or turn them loose. How do we get the proof and/or a witness to a crime six years ago and in a combat zone? Whatever is presented is sure to be questioned. Keep them in GITMO.

Wow, nice way to bring terrorists into this country. Why do I just not trust this man as not having a plan behind everything he does. He really needs to be impeached - our interests are definitely not on his agenda.

I don’t trust him one bit!

...Keep them in GITMO.

Yes! I was pleased to see Congressman Rogers on Fox this morning to speak out against this. I don't understand why they have to come to the US (let alone Michigan) when we have a perfectly good solution at GITMO.

But, hey, that's OK, send them to Michigan so they can hook up with their buds, blow up the Mackinac Bridge and do who knows what other mischief ?
