"The jolt the program delivered to an ailing auto industry even made a believer of U.S. Rep. Jack Kingston, R-1, who voted Friday to pump more money into it after opposing all other economic stimulus programs, including the initial Car Allowance Rebate System, or CARS."

I’m sure Obama’s union buddies really appreciate this payback.
You might answer back with some question about just what each sale of this kind actually costs and what it actually buys.
Among many many other things: Good cars that would sell privately for more than the government grant are being wantonly destroyed, junk dealers are being pressured into unprofitable transactions, and car dealers are getting the royal runaround by the government that couldn’t even put cash on the line before giving the start signal.
Uh... just leafing through my copy of the constitution here... trying to find the part where I’m expected to pay for someone else’s car...
Nope; can’t find it.
Undoubtably, but for me, the worst was the fast track vote I was unaware of, and the fact that my normally, very trustworthy Rep. signed on with it!
Shakes head. They ALL have to go.

Not if they all buy Fords.
Incredible isn’t it? I am so tired of feel good legislation, and the mindset that it is always better to do something than nothing. Sheesh.
EXACTLY!
Some libs in Washington don’t want us to drive older cars.
Some libs in Washington want us to buy new cars.
So, instead of giving us a tax credit, for the purchase of new cars, these idiots come up with a screwed up plan that does not treat the dealers fairly, will increase the price of older used cars, will increase the cost of used car parts, and is going to end up giving tax money to people that were probably going to buy a new car, anyway, in the next year!
This is a stupid, stupid program!
Beyond that, it is so wasteful it is sad. This does NOTHING for the environment. This is ANTI-RECYCLING!
Now, parts that could have been scrapped off of a used vehicle will have to be purchased, new!
Bingo!
Thanks for the excellent point by point evaluation.

I saw that the other day here, as well as articles about the program’s imminent demise. No such luck, apparently, thanks to the valiant effort’s of our tireless Representatives /sarc.

Re- cycling is no longer *green* ?
Lots of good parts that could have been re-used will be trashed.
Charities will lose money from their donation car programs.
I drive a 1994 Nissan Maxima that I bought second hand. That was 13 years ago, but she only had 24K on her and was cherry. (A doctor’s ‘middle of the night emergency’ car that he no longer needed.) Paid $10K at the time, which was a steal based on her pristine condition.
She’s fifteen this year. Still get 35 MPG, has regular maintenenace and just had all of her belts and her water pump replaced. $600.00 cash out of pocket. I haven’t had a car payment in 10 years!
I will NEVER buy a new eco-car, no matter HOW MUCH other taxpayers ‘give’ me. And when this one dies for good and if I’m not too old and feeble to hoist myself into it, I’ll be buying a Ford F-150 IF Ford keeps it’s nose clean. :)
I am in complete agreement with your father. Government? Get the h#ll OUT of my life!
I have a 1996 Dodge Caravan that I got 3 years ago at an auction for $250.00. The body was in good shape, but it had a blown (connecting rod thru block and shot tranny clutches and front pump) 3.3 V-6 engine and transmission. I am an excellent mechanic, and I rebuilt the drivetrain with parts from a U-Pull It junkyard, and necessary new parts like clutch packs and main and rod bearings, rings, cylinder head reconditioning, etc. It gost me $900.00 in parts. I have put 55,000 miles on it.
The engine is perfectly tuned. I have driven it back and forth from my home in Georgia to Chicago 10 times. With the tires inflated to 32 lbs, and the cruise control set to 74 mph, this 5000 lb vehicle gets 28-30 mpg on level ground.
I did the same thing to a 1998 Dodge Intrepid, had to rebuild the powertrain also, 3.5 V-6 engine, got it 4 years ago, and IT gets 36 mpg at 75 mph on cruise control on level ground. It cost 875.00 in parts. I have put 60,000 miles on it.
The Obama admin HATES people like me I bet.
Car sales go up....
taxpayers pay....
government needs more money because it's working....
Taxes as a whole go up....
Government succeeds....
Politicians claim job well done....
Yep, who would consider this a program not working?
I saw that on his show friday. since then, has it been debunked? was GB hoaxed on this? he usually does his homework before bringing up something like this.
It will likely drive up the price of used cars as well.
I’ll call you when my car starts falling apart; I’ll sell it to you for a dollar and you can keep it running for another 100K, LOL! :)
My car before this one was a Dodge Colt with a Mitsubishi engine. I think I had that car for 13 years.
My daughter has been driving a 12 year old Ford Explorer with 130,000 miles. Got 14 mpg. It has no resale value and is falling apart (each repair costs bigger and bigger $$)
She’s at the Ford dealer right now buying a Mariner. Got the clunker $$$ and 0% financing.
This is a kid who put herself through college, grad school and works at a conservative university.
We discussed the pros and cons of taking advantage of the cash for clunkers. We do not like that taxpayers’ dollars are paying for it. However, since the cash is going to go to someone, and if we can say some deserve it more than others.... or if we had a choice to give it to someone, it’s better my daughter than a low life.
