Iran state TV confirms arrest of 3 Americans

SULAIMANIYAH, Iraq (AP) - Iran state TV confirmed Saturday that it has detained three Americans who crossed the border from northern Iraq, saying they failed to heed warnings from Iranian guards.

Kurdish officials from the self-ruled region in northern Iraq said the three—two men and a woman—were tourists who had mistakenly crossed into Iranian territory Friday while hiking in a mountainous area near the resort town of Ahmed Awaa.

"The Iranians said they have arrested them because they entered their land without legal permission," said Qubad Talabani, the Kurdish regional government's envoy to Washington.

Iran's state owned Arabic-language al-Alam TV station cited a "well-informed source" in the Interior Ministry that the three Americans were detained Friday after crossing into Iran's Kurdistan province.

The report said the Americans were arrested after they did not heed warnings from Iranian border guards.

State Department spokesman Robert Wood said Saturday that Washington had asked the Swiss, who represent U.S. interests in Tehran, "to confirm these reports with Iranian authorities and, if true, to seek consular access" to the detained Americans.

I don’t know I never have a lot of sympathy for these people that “accidentally” cross the border of a foreign country and get captured.

For some reason, Kurdistan has just never been on my list of top tourist destinations.

Tikal, Foz do Iguazu, Santorini, sure. I mean a good mosquito net will keep off the rabid vampire bats and disease bearing mosquitos , a well paid cabie can keep you away from kidnap gangs and Muslim thugs and how often does a whole island blow up anyway? But KURDISTAN??????

Somehow when the Lonely Planets guide book describes it as an autonomous region of Iraq bordering on Iran and the “Dangers and Annoyances” section runs 200 pages I just loose interest.

I think we’ll go see the redwoods and tour a couple of vineyards this year.

Oh, he will, just like the last chick that got out. They will trade Iranian terrorists captured in Iraq for these 3 idiots.

What were they thinking?

Everyone knows intrepid hyper-tourists wandering around ill defined boundaries between poorly guarded borders choose China and North Korea.

Sheeeesh!

I wouldn’t put it past them to have deliberately crossed to take a picture showing off for their buddies at home.

I don't know how all these kids can afford traveling the world like they do. When I was their age I had to work.

IRAN: “president Obama, we have 3 Americans captured. We would want to exchange...”

OBAMA: “Are those Americans...white?’

IRAN: “yes..”

OBAMA:”Let them rot in hell”

American tourists hiking in the mountains of northern Iraq???

Just the place I was thinking of going on my next vacation. Wonder which tourist agency set that up?

1. "Death Wish Vacations" INVITES YOU to BEAUTIFUL Northern Iraq!

2. "Assyrian Adventures" -- the trip of a lifetime (sentence)!

3. "Tehran Travail Agency" -- The trip that will make you pause!

4. "Jihad Heavenly Hikes" -- Where virgins have taken your breath away!

Double Darwin nomination

Being anywhere near the Iranian border.

Not heeding warnings of Iranian border guards (assuming that is accurate).

The worst part is, as someone posted above, The Kenyan will probably trade several terrorists to get these jerks back.
