Actually, NLP works quite well on intelligent people. IMO it isn’t a matter of intelligence or unintelligence to make NLP do its trick: it works on either equally well.

So how do you defend yourself against this tactic?

It clearly doesn't work on everyone so where does this technique fall short?

Personally I can't stand the man and his politics.

Good read but it seems too wierd to believe.

I agree but ... since I first read it last year, the evidence in favor of it being correct has just continued to pile up.

We're conservatives, we don't need anyone to do our own thinking for us. Read it, observe whether it matches reality or not and make up your own mind.

See post #26 for some pointers.

I'll start by recommending this .pdf as a good intro to the topic of NLP -- I'm halfway thru reading it now, and it appears to be good stuff. You write:

> So how do you defend yourself against this tactic?

An excellent question that would be easy to over-simplify in answering. But here's an extract from the .pdf file that puts it nicely into a nutshell:

“The only thing you need to do to break a negative hypnotic spell that has been cast on you is begin to think rationally, to begin to think critically. And if you decide that you choose this message as one that’s good for you, by all means sit back, relax, and enjoy the ride. But, if you decide that this is not something you want to have in your life, just simply analyze it, criticise it, ridicule it, and say “Hey, that’s not how the world works.” And you’ll have protected your mind from taking on board something which you really dont need.” The Power of Conversational Hypnosis, Clifford Mee and Igor Ledochowski, re the section entitled “The Dark Side of Hypnosis.”

Funny that schools seemed to have stopped teaching critical thinking shortly after I graduated and LOOK at what is happening now!

I don't know if there is a relation there but there is no such thing as coincidence.

There’s something to be said about that, definitely. We can be made to accept all kinds of trash if only we will accept it uncritically.

i’m starting to believe that the Zer0 truly is Nyarlathotep...

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Nyarlathotep

he is described as a “tall, swarthy man” who resembles an Egyptian pharaoh who wanders the earth, seemingly gathering legions of followers through his demonstrations of strange and seemingly magical instruments, the narrator of the story among them. These followers lose awareness of the world around them, and through the narrator’s increasingly unreliable accounts the reader gets a sense of the world’s utter collapse. The story ends with the narrator as part of an army of servants for Nyarlathotep.

Obama’s insulting hand gestures

This hasn't ever been brought up clearly in a cultural context. Regardless of whether Obama/Soetoro is a Muslim now, he was a raised a Muslim. It is always a deadly insult to gesture with the left hand (which is only used for wiping one's bottom). Always. In Indonesia, with Lolo Soetoro as his father, he would most certainly have that pounded into him, one way or another.

President Bush couldn't care less same as anyone else not raised in Muslim society could care less. Obama/Soetoro is different.

I read it (speed reader)! Oh wow! This is a MUST READ for everyone! This article, albeit with a few typographical errors, is well-documented with footnotes and links to videos/articles to demonstrate the points made. Obama DOES use pacing, anchor points, specific hand gestures, cadence of speech, etc. to mesermize people.

I did not know exactly WHAT was wrong, but would not listen to him because something told me the speeches were manipulative. This article details WHY they are manipulative. He has and still is brainwashing people. The media is complicit in that no one calls him on his lies. Or, better yet, the media is NOT allowed to call him on it by controlling of who is allowed to ask questions.

The recent question regarding the Gates affair was probably not supposed to come up. Obama is one of the greatest threats to our form of government, society and way of life that has EVER surfaced and must be stopped by never being allowed to hold public office again. Americans simply must wake up or risk being destroyed. This should have been spread all throughout the media since it was published. How sad.

That is why he has been trained and positioned for his present job. Who he is fronting for is the real story of his Presidency. And that has yet to be revealed.

I don't know who you are, but you have presented some real truths in your commentary. You are correct in that if one watches him AND listens to him speak and does not have a critically thinking mind, one can easily be deceived. And, the last comment you made is the most important of all and one which I have been ranting and raving about to my wife -- How in God's name did this man ever get the nomination for president with no real experience of ANY kind? Some group is behind him and wants him to be where he is or he never would have made it. Who paid the bills? That group needs to be exposed. I don't believe it is wholly made up of U.S. citizens.

I have no idea about the hypnosis angle, but I think more and more people are totally sick of seeing his face and hearing his voice. His cutesy little up and down voice inflections are grating, to say the least. I think he's starting to wear thin on a lot of people.

It clearly doesn't work on everyone so where does this technique fall short?

I remember seeing a professional hypnotist do a show in the 70's...he was really good. He started out by asking for volunteers who might be interested in being in the show (as hypnotized subjects, doing funny things). About 75 people from the audience came up. Through a series of short tests and preliminary things, he vetted the 75, and reduced them to about 10 people. He said he was doing this because, as he explained, some people were more prone to the power of suggestion than others. He also explained that you could not hypnotize people to do things against their moral values, but could make them do things that did not fall in that criteria

He ended up with about 10 people who he put under hypnosis and made do funny and entertaining things. There was little doubt in my mind that these people were actually hypnotized.

Bottom line....from that show I can see that at least 10-30% can be manipulated through hypnosis. This is especially true if people **WANT** to believe what they are being told.

"makes me ill"

My wife and I don't let it get that far. As soon as this fool starts dispensing his swill, we change channels. In the brief time we view him, I'm too busy yelling at the tv screen to hear much of what he says anyway.

Well, yes. I do think there's something else involved, including hypnosis. I read over the Obama timeline thread that has been reposted and shudder to think that I, a year younger with the mere experience of leading ~100 programmers in a team, had more leadership experience than that man on election day. (And more published written work)

Many years ago, as a teen, I needed to have my wisdom teeth pulled. The oral surgeon ‘used’ hypnosis in addition to anesthesia for the inoffice extractions.

The doc ‘tried’ to put me under; (visual, I was sitting in a dentists chair, in his office, bright light). I remember him saying ‘feel the warmth of the sun’ but I just kept thinking... I am in a Dentist’s office...its a stoopid light’ Anywho...he said my thougthts were ‘cluttered’ and not a good hypno candidate.

And THAT is why I never bought into the ‘hopey/changey’ mantra...too much ‘thinking’ aboout what The One was saying...
