Kids are nothing like we/they were 15 - 20 years ago. Today they’re irresponsible, disrespectful, and arrogant beyond any comprehension of sense.

Gotcha. Kids today are like they were 35 years ago, as you say irresponsible, disrespectful and arrogant. Yup, that was me.

I was unaware that a mere 15-20 years later, kids that age had lost those characteristics. Only to have them re-develop those characteristics a few short years later.

Given the responses to my statement, perhaps I need to clarify? Has anyone been to a high school lately? How about an inner-city high school? I worked as a substitute teacher for a short time, and I was dumbfounded by the attitudes. These kids don’t want to work in any way, shape or form! They want to sit and chat with their friends, text on their iPhones, play on the computers, but you try to get them to discuss literature, you’re met with sneers, jeers, and less than half of them will actually pay any attention.

I give teachers their quarter; I couldn’t do it. I heard one “fine upstanding” teenager call his teacher a “Dumb C*nt” and walk out flipping her the bird. I was actually called to watch a classroom after a student threw a desk at the teacher and ruptured her spleen.

I’m not talking about the old-school “Those damn kids” mantra... I’m talking about blatant disrespect just to get a rise out of classmates. It’s no longer about education; schools are social forums.
