Terrorists could use internet to launch nuclear attack
Guardian ^ | 7/24/2009 | Bobbie Johnson

Terrorists groups could soon use the internet to help set off a devastating nuclear attack, according to new research.

The claims come in a study commissioned by the International Commission on Nuclear Non-proliferation and Disarmament (ICNND), which suggests that under the right circumstances, terrorists could break into computer systems and launch an attack on a nuclear state – triggering a catastrophic chain of events that would have a global impact.

I’m sure that countries with nuclear missiles have the command and control computers connected to outside networks. That just makes so much sense!

And of course terrorist hackers could easily get the launch codes, and convince the guys in the silos to simultaneously insert their keys, tap in the day code and authenticator, and launch (after the terrorists load the nav solutions into the missile guidance set).

Naturally, the suitcase nukes would be first.

Yep. And there’s an RJ45 jack on the side of every ICBM and MIRV, too.

It seems it would be in the interest of the sponsors of the study to have find something that justifies their existence.

The control networks for America’s, Russia’s, China’s, etc. ICBMs are not supposed to be hitched to the public Internet. But because by definition these networks are secret, few are in a position to know. I would expect it far more likely that sabotage is possible than are unauthorized launches.

There is always FAIL-DEADLY
Fail-deadly is a concept in nuclear military strategy which encourages deterrence by guaranteeing an immediate, automatic and overwhelming response to an attack. The term fail-deadly was coined as a contrast to fail-safe.

It is an example of second strike strategy, in that aggressors are discouraged from attempting a first strike attack. Under fail-deadly nuclear deterrence, policies and procedures controlling the retaliatory strike will authorize launch even if the existing command and control structure has already been neutralized by a first strike. The deterrent efficacy of such a system clearly depends on other nuclear-armed nations having foreknowledge of it. The Soviet Union used a fail-deadly system known as Dead Hand (codenamed “Perimetr”); it is not certain if Russia still uses it.

Also the title of a new book by Harold Coyle - dealing with this very system.

Not a chance. There is no "right condition". There are too many failsafes in the chain.

Go back to the first response from a fellow missile weenie. He spells it out exactly as it must happen.

State controlled American media (SCAM) Headline?

Some Internet restrictions required, White House says
Terrorists Could Use Internet To Launch Nuclear Attack
"Most likely terrorists would use right wing sites, we'll shut 'em down when we detect a threat."
