(English-language translation)

Radio Martí - The Senate Foreign Relations Committee approved by acclamation the nomination of Cuban theologian Miguel Díaz as U.S. ambassador to the Vatican, an appointment that must be ratified by the full Senate.

If confirmed, 45-year-old Havana native Díaz would be the first Hispanic U.S. ambassador to the Holy See since the establishment of diplomatic relations in 1984.

Díaz, the son of a waiter and a typist, was the first member of his family to earn a university degree. He studied at the University of St. Thomas and the University of Notre Dame, working as professor at the latter and at the University of Dayton and Barry University.

He was also President of the Academy of Catholic Hispanic Theologians and Dean of St. Vincent de Paul Seminary in Boynton Beach, Florida. He speaks English, Spanish, and Italian. He lives in Minneapolis and is the father of four children.

Díaz is presently a professor of theology at St. John's University and the College of St. Benedict in Minnesota.

Unfortunately, it looks like the latter. A news item in CatholicCulture.org (http://www.catholicculture.org/news/headlines/index.cfm?storyid=3052&repos=4&subrepos=2&searchid=495056) reports that “Diaz— who supported the nomination of former Kansas Gov. Kathleen Sebelius as secretary of Health and Human Services, despite her record on abortion— donated $1,000 to the Obama Victory Fund in September 2008.”

If that’s the case, hopefully the Vatican will turn down this nominee also.

China has its “Catholic Patriotic Association”. Ohbummer has his faux-Catholic apologists like Kmiec, Díaz, and Sebelius, among others.

Hate to say it, but some Catholic pro-lifers with otherwise-good records (e.g. Sam Brownback) also supported Sebelius. It’s baffling. I don’t understand it. But... my point? (Sigh.) It’s hard to find good ‘uns these days.
