I hadn't seen this issue yet, but it looks like Baum has really stepped in it. The ACS is a very thoughtful, professional, and scientific body.
Hopefully they'll get rid of this loon before he does something worse.
Scientists of all stripes have good reason to be concerned about the voodoo scientists of global warming. Voodoo science hurts hard science.
The ACS is as liberal as all of the other professional organizations. I dropped my membership years ago because of the extremely liberal positions they take on a number of subjects. They are simply another liberal lobbying group and no longer a scientific professional organization.
It seems they have been losing membership for years. It used to be that one had to be recommended by a member to join. Now they send out pre-approved applications. I am through with them, however. Their applications go straight to the trash can.
Mr. Baum is the reason I quit the ACS several years back.
I started reading C&E News in 1965. I agree that it has been a very good publication. I am excited that the readers have been so vocal in hammering Baum for this blatantly unscientific opinion.
My father was a Chemistry professor and ACS member (and is one of the first ACS Fellows) and although his political views were to the left, he wouldn’t tolerate any nonsense. I hope the members manage to get Baum removed from the editor position.
