MILITARY: PETA contends Valley Center training violates zoning (CA)

The animal rights group People for the Ethical Treatment of Animals is contending that medical training using live pigs at a Valley Center avocado grove violates the property's zoning.

The organization says in a letter to the director of the Department of Planning and Land use that the land off of Pala Loma Drive is zoned limited agricultural and that medical training exercises are not a permitted use.

For the last several months, Marines and sailors have been taking part in "live tissue" training on the property using anesthetized pigs that are later euthanized. The training previously was conducted at the Escondido police training facility until city officials said they did not believe the injuring of animals on city property was appropriate.

Marine Corps officials say the training is vital for medics and frontline troops headed to war in Afghanistan and Iraq.

PETA disagrees, contending medical mannequins and other methods that don't involve using pigs are available. It also says that at least 13 pigs died last summer while they were transported to the training.

PETA nutjobs think they know more about zoning than the Dept. of Planning and Land use.

It’d be a nice end to a day or week of training. :-)

They must have over looked the party that says the military is exempt from zoning and land use.

You don't want to eat one that has been anesthetized, but I damn sure want my medic to have live tissue experience before he gets to me with the sutures. Pig is ok with me for that training.

PETA isn’t just another humane society. PETA will gladly kill beasts rather than see them be put to the “servitude” of being livestock and pets. There was a big scandal when PETA was found killing pets which had been surrendered to them by tearful owners who were falsely told that the PETA people would find them a new home. PETA is lower than puppy poop, with apologies to puppy poop.

There might be a way of getting them involved in the final stages of veterinary surgeries, where the success of the operation would be directly measured by the welfare of the live, conscious animal afterward.

All true and a lot more. They’re in business to collect donations, make noise and support Vegans. They could care less about animal welfare, in fact the ones euthanizing the pets you mentioned were dumping the remains in peoples dumpsters.

Sounds like PETA just volunteered for medical experiments...

The only problem I see with that is having been married 3 times to animal lovers... Fluffy dying after a successful surgery is a major drama moment.

Best to use feeder pigs that no-one cares about, except PETA, and euthanize them after practice. Botched or not. No one sues for the loss of Fluffy.

I would be more than happy to induce realistic battlefield wounds on the volunteers, so they could be practice dummies for our wonderful medics.

I am retired but I believe I need refresher training on the MK-19.

That would do it. Prolly only take a few hours to get the training pencil-whipped completed.
