Romney, Huckabee and Palin are GOP Favorites for 2012 [Giuliani is still around, too] [sick]

Three Republicans are bunched within five points of each when potential GOP presidential candidates are matched up for 2012 with former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney barely on top, according to a Fox News/Opinion Dynamics poll conducted July 21-22. The margin of error for the part of the survey dealing only with Republican voters is 6 points.

Romney leads with 22 percent, followed by former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee with 21 percent and former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin with 17 percent. Former New York City mayor (we're dealing with a lot of "formers" here) Rudi Giuliani polls 13 percent, former House Speaker Newt Gingrich gets 9 percent and by the time we get to an elected official, Louisiana Gov. Bobby Jindal, he scrapes together 3 percent. Ten percent say it's too soon to decide.

If she can really come out strong get a great organization and reshape her image while campaigning to get rid of some of BO’s allies in congress then i will be convinced that she can grab the nomination and maybe the White House. Unless and until that happens i still have my doubts. Hey i hope i am wrong i think Palin is awesome.

Winning Senate and House seats is the top priority right now and 2012 talk is just a distraction.

True, but the Senate and House elections are 'local' elections, so the national one in 2012 is the one most interesting to folks who aren't particularly interested in the political doings of other states.

I think Obama has proven to me that sometimes, you really do have to hold your nose and pull that lever.

Too sadly true.

I'm puzzled over Palin’s resigning.

Why? She was VERY clear about her reasons.

I worry about Palin because you either love her or hate her, there is no middle ground.

She hasn't had the chance to get out there on her own, not tied to another's candidacy to speak to the voters directly. I believe that if she travels to the lower 48, and is successful in campaigning and fundraising for Congressional candidates for 2010, it will be the clincher for any future plans.

Not sure about DeMint; remains to be seen. I don't think Haley's wife and family are too interested in seeing him run for President, and frankly, I think his accent is too strong. Sad, but some folks in the Northeast and the West Coast will ignore him simply because he speaks like a Southern Gentleman, which they associate with patriarchy and racism. Don't get me wrong, I LOVE his accent, and would vote for him, if he were the nominee, but I don't think he'd have a strong national following.

Not sure about Bobby Jindal. He's very smart, from all I've seen and read about him, but again, it will likely come down to what his family thinks about it. He's young, so he has plenty of time to create a national following. I think he still wants to get things cleaned up, politically, in Louisiana, and that's a BIG job.

That is a nice list but my point in post 78 is to ask the question who is doing better than Palin?

Most posters want to name some obscure figure as “undamaged goods” but the reality is that they aren’t “goods” at all, they are obscure because they aren’t charismatic and endowed with the ability to rapidly move the political air like Palin is.

Even during this worst of the worst polling snapshot period that will likely last until she starts the first political pushback of her life at the national level, Palin is either top of the heap or in the top of the heap.

Conservatives are not just passive house pets waiting to see who the media will find acceptable for them to vote for.

It is OK for conservatives and republicans to choose their own candidates in spite of the media’s protests you know.

Perhaps the most destructive act ever done to the Reagan legacy was done by Reagan himself when he chose Bush in 1980.

I agree that it turned out that way, as BushI and BushII have done more to defeat conservatism than any liberal ever did. It was a political decision, and one that paid off, as BushI delivered some credibility with the Country Clubbers. Remember, John Anderson was a third party candidate, even back then liberals were trying to syphon off enough votes to defeat the conservative majority.

I think if you want to have a moderate on the ticket, it has to be one that is honest about what he believes, and is capable of governing without making you want to pull your hair out if he does become President. Rudy fits that description for me; McCain, Huckabee, Romney and all the other RINOs like that do not.

Bottom line is, this time it better be a conservative on the top of the ticket, or the loss will be massive, as conservatives flail about for what to do, who to believe in. Our nominees have been Bush, Bush, Dole, Bush, Bush, McCain. That string of failures ends now, or the party ends now, and the country ends shortly thereafter.

which would be a good chunk of that voting squishy middle i was referring to.

Correct, for right now.

But their numbers will continue to shrink drastically as Sarah, who is a fighter first and foremost, continues to fight back on EVERY lie and smear, and additionally, since she is freed up from her responsibilities, will be spending a ton of time talking to the American people in every event and manner possible.

This is a media created perception that will be undone by the barrage of conservatism and the associated smack-down that Sarah is going to deliver to the left.

Conservatives need to not only figure out how to get a conservative at the top of the ticket but also how to finesse one into the veep slot.

A replay of a Reagan being followed by a Rudy or a Romney doesn’t help us and now that the Rockefeller/Romney/Rudy crowd has taken off their masks since Governor Palin appeared, we are not in the mood to appease them.

The rino response to Palin exposed the fact that they have been at war against us all along for election after election, we always wondered how the Doles and McCains kept squeaking in and why our republican congresses and senates were so weak and unmotivated to roll back legislation, and immigration and defund liberalism, now we know that they are two sides of the same coin with the democrats, with the only real differences being economic issues.

Either you are uninformed, or purposely have not been listening.

With all the Palin threads on FR and not informed. One would have to be blind or totally ignore them. Just because one doesn’t fall into the follow me camp doesn’t mean one can’t see the forrest for all the trees that abound.

Thread after thread has castigation of people on it from the candidate down to the people that support that candidate. Moaning and groaning abounds about the lack of media coverage or too much attention to items that don’t matter, its bias or lack thereof, etc. etc. etc.

Palin won’t win a thing with just her base support. She will need support and cross overs from many others before she becomes the one to be elected.

It looks to me as though she holds her own in the possibility of taking the nomination.

How quickly one forgets not to distant races like Dean, Hillary, Guiliani, Romney, etc. Often front runners are just that front runners until the race reaches the stretch and then they run out of gas very rapidly. We’ll see when it’s time to pay the piper.

It isn't a monopoly

Yes, it is. And has been for nearly 150 years now. In that time, the oligarchs have guarded their power through gerrymandering and other measures that make it difficult for a smaller parties to field a candidate.

Where we are at politically and how the debate has been framed and reframed is a direct result. If you're happy with the status quo and rewarding that system is your thing, go ahead.

Gosh, why don’t we form a 50th “third party” and change it all?

Gosh, why don’t we form a 50th “third party” and change it all?

Why don't we just keep voting for the same party? Don't worry, when Republicans are in charge again, they'll have learned their lesson and will all of the sudden become small government conservatives. All we have to do is wait for 2002. Wait, just give them a little more time, after 2004, it will all change and then we'll get small government. Landslide in 2010 for sure, and then it will all change. Well, that didn't work out, let's vote for them in 2012. Then we'll surely get constitutional federal government.

Grow up. There is no carrot. Stop pulling the plow.
