The FDA recently went public with misleading information about the safety of electronic cigarettes and the marketing of the devices, not only using its clout but recruiting other prominent organizations to demonize a product that has great public health benefit potential.
A group of prominent doctors and tobacco researchers, including Dr. Michael Siegel at the Boston University School of Public Health, Dr. Joel Nitzkin of the AAPHP Tobacco Control Task Force, and Dr. Brad Rodu, Endowed Chair, Tobacco Harm Reduction Research University of Louisville, challenge the FDA to provide the full quantitative data of the study upon which the FDA has based its warning against electronic cigarettes. They are concerned that the FDA's disingenuous targeting of electronic cigarettes through a biased presentation of the scientific data has had significant negative impact upon the public perception of electronic cigarettes, when the best available evidence suggests that these have shown that the devices offer great potential to reduce serious health issues among traditional tobacco smokers.
In a July 22 news release, the FDA cited the detectable presence of carcinogens and "toxic chemicals" in a "small sample" of electronic cigarette cartridges as reason for alarm, singling out nitrosamines as particularly toxic. What the FDA fails to inform the public is that detectable amounts of carcinogens are also present in nicotine replacement products such as NicoDerm CQ and Nicorette gum, both approved by the FDA, and nitrosamines that can be also found in food items such bacon and beer. This double standard and alarmist attitude has had the significant and unfortunate effect of inducing hysteria among the public, discouraging tobacco smokers from using a product which is thought to be a significantly safer alternative to traditional tobacco.

Ping*
They can have my Cylon when they pry it from my cold, dead fingers!
Bump, and thanks for the ping.
Thanks for the post, libertarian27.
I’m having trouble with the link?
And more importantly, nanny state in-your-face potential, meaning that it has great potential to engage in public conduct that will cause liberal government-sucking busybodies' heads to explode, AND THERE IS NOTHING THEY CAN DO ABOUT IT! The FDA should approve the product on that basis alone. Think of all the mental health benefits to beleaguered freedom lovers as they get to figuratively flip liberals the bird.
This is a freaking nightmare that won’t end until the citizens all stand up and take our country back from Statists. That includes libs and leftist Dem voters too.
They didn’t sign up for this. They rail against Big business....well, here you have Big Tobacco (losing customers and billions for tobacco to e-cigs), Big Pharma (losing customers and billions in lame ineffective NRT to e-cigs) and Big Gubmint (losing billions in tax money to freedom).
That’s too much to compete against. Science and logic has no place here. E-cigs must be killed in the womb before it grows up to be a strapping young lad that crushes them.

e-cig ping
First time in my life I've thought I could actually successfully quit smoking.
Thanks for the ping!
e-cig ping?
Same here. How long did you smoke?
This EPA thing is so bogus. Actions are being taken bigtime by many.
They are trying to scare vapers into going back to smoking regualr cigs which they KNOW are lethal. This is criminal.
Almost 40 years.
Those three regular cigarettes a day are a tribute to my husband who is still smoking regular cigs. I go outside with him to smoke and that's when I have a regular cig.
It's funny that it ticks husband off that I can vape pretty much everywhere -- in places where he wants a cig and can't have one, he tries to convince me NOT to vape "just because". It's kind of funny -- he's really jealous of my vaping and he thinks that I don't know it.
I think one of the things about vaping that is so cool is that no big pharma invented and in-your-face marketed this product to us smokers. Smokers, instead on their own, found this great alternative that is proving a huge success in getting people to quit smoking cigarettes relatively painlessly.
How dare we? How dare we own our own success? How dare we think for ourselves and take our own risks? Who do we think we are? "Free citizens"? /Snort!
I’ve personally got five people to quit and switch to ecigs. They’re just loving all the flavors. I’m making my own flavorings now.
