Lily Burk's neck was slashed, coroner says

It's not yet clear whether the wound was the main cause of the 17-year-old's death. A 50-year-old transient has been arrested in the slaying. Charlie Samuel has a history of violence and drugs.

The attacker who killed 17-year-old Lily Burk slashed her neck, according to the Los Angeles County coroner's report.

It was unclear from the report if the wound was the main cause of the girl's death. A spokesman for the coroner's office could not be reached for comment.

Police said earlier today that fingerprints recovered from inside the car in which Burk was found slain matched those of a transient. They said Charlie Samuel, 50, encountered the girl near the Southwestern University School of Law on Wilshire Boulevard.

Burk had gone to the campus at the old Bullock's Wilshire building Friday to collect some papers for her mother, an attorney who worked there.

Samuel was arrested at 5:30 p.m. Friday on suspicion of possessing drugs and drug paraphernalia on 3rd Street in downtown Los Angeles -- at least 12 hours before Burk's body was discovered nearby in her black Volvo at 5th and Alameda streets.

Law enforcement sources said Samuel has a history of violent crime and drug abuse.

So tragic. May she rest in peace.

Why was the scuzzball who killed her walking around loose?

"Samuel has a history of violent crime and drug abuse"

So, what was he doing in the streets.

It is the government, with it's bleeding-heart policies, that killed the young lady.

What was a nice girl like her doing in such a terrible neighborhood?

When I was a teenager my father drove my sister and I around to some of the bad neighborhoods (high crime rates) in the area in which we lived. Knowing my father we were probably armed at the time but I didn't know it them. He did this to show us where NEVER to drive or go. He did this shortly in advance of both of us getting a driver's license.

He tried hard to make a point that there were very dangerous neighborhoods and we should stay away from them if we wanted in increase our chances of staying alive.

This was a good lesson and we survived. I get the impression that many parents don't go through this exercise with their children. I also believe liberal parents don't warm their children of the dangers out there due to their PC nature.

Funny. People die every day at the hands of another. There is nothing in this post that indicates this is special. Maybe you can elucidate.

Not trying to pick a fight, but this case is getting a lot of local coverage for (i believe), the following reasons:

1. The emotional resonance. Every parent realizes that you can't protect your kids all the time, and it's very easy to imagine yourself in these folks shoes. Even if you would never send your kid to the ghetto to run an errand for you, you realize that they could encounter an animal in a “safe” location like your local shopping center.

2. This qualifies as “news”, in that the victim is unusual. She belongs to a demographic that is much less likely to be a victim of violent crime than many others: young, middle class, female, not involved in any illegal activities. Hate to say it, but if she was a young, urban male high school dropout selling rock for the Hoovers, this would not, in fact, be news insofar as news needs to be unusual.

3. A suspect has been identified, giving a face to this random horror.

Not looking to pick a fight either, but I see no difference between this case and the ones in my own little town, which increased when our neighbors from NYC decided to move in.

Why is this case newsworthy?

You are right. And Arnold wants to let 27,000 criminals out of prison before their release date. Do you think crimes might increase?

" 27,000 criminals out of prison before their release date. Do you think crimes might increase? "

I was thinking the same thing when I heard the news. With 27,000 out prematurely, not even for "good behavior," how can crime not increase in CA?

Protection of its citizens is the first responsibility of a government. California prefers to spend on everything else and puts safety of its citizens last.

With Repub governors like this, who needs the Dems to screw up the country?

Haven’t blamed the victim quite enough yet, huh? One thread’s worth wasn’t enough?
