Well, this time write your own anthem. "Dixie" was written for a minstrel show in New York, NY by a Yankee.

"The Battle Hymn of the Republic" was originally a Southern camp-meeting song, "Oh, Brothers, Will You Meet Us on Canaan's Happy Shore?" This might explain why my very old Southern high school used it as the high school song --- with different words, of course. The melody was stolen by the Yankees for the "Battle Hymn of the Republic". Why am I not surprised? They stole everything else down here. LOL.

See Link and Link2. And for more of the lyrics of the camp song version and how the song morphed into the "John Brown's Body" version that preceded "The Battle Hymn of the Republic" see Link3

I should have qualified that...

It was in good shape many years ago when I was there...

..and my daughter was recently in Atlanta and said it's still there.

It's a shame not to preserve it.

At the premiere in 1939, my mother (one of those rare Atlanta natives) was there, sitting on her father's shoulders so that she could see Clark Gable and Vivien Leigh going into the theater. It was an unbelievably big deal for Atlanta, needless to say.

My Granny was there too.

Don't fret.

The Cyclorama was falling into disrepair and the painting was in pretty bad shape, so they did a complete renovation of the entire building and the painting in 1979. They've got lots of other stuff besides the diorama, including the locomotive Texas from the Great Locomotive Chase.

Read all about it.

I bet she knew my mom. What school did she go to? Mom went to Morningside Elementary and then to North Avenue Presbyterian.

I’ll have to ask my Dad.I’ll call him later, I’m in Texas right now. I believe she grew up in Lawrenceville.

Lawrenceville is a suburb of Atlanta now, but in those days it was most definitely not. . . . Atlanta was just a little tiny town, and Lawrenceville was a county seat and very independent (it still is a county seat!)

In those days, I went to sleep away summer camp in Roswell, which is much closer to Atlanta than L'ville but quite a long trip in those days. There was a two-lane highway from Atlanta to Roswell, and you crossed the Chattahoochee on an old single-lane green iron truss bridge. Getting to Lawrenceville was even more complicated!
