The long-awaited 911 tape and audio of the controversial July 16 arrest of Harvard professor Henry Louis Gates Jr. are being made public for the first time today, Cambridge officals just announced.
The tapes will speak for themselves, said Cambridge Police Commissioner Robert Haas.
Hass said the tapes will create some confusion, but only with police codes youll hear but the remainder of the tapes are crystal clear.
Its in plain language in most part and you can draw your own conclusions, Haas.
In the 911 tapes, Lucia Whalen can be heard spelling out the name of the street and saying that another woman approached her about seeing two men trying to enter the Ware Street home.

The following link has mp3 files of part of the radio transmission and the 911 call. I’ve been told you can hear Gates on one of them, but I haven’t heard him. I only had time to listen once to the radio transmission, before I had to leave and tend to other matters. I had listened to the 911 tape several times.
Correction: It had the mp3 files. The page has changed. I don’t know if the files can still be found there or not.

At about 2:52, the radio transmission begins. It’s difficult to hear very much in the background.
The internet has spoiled me rotten. I’m so used to the news hitting the internet first before TV news reports the story. Not in this case, though.
