The 54-year-old president, a keen runner and cyclist once nicknamed "Speedy", was expected to be kept in the Val-de-Grace military hospital overnight and he stumbled and felt faint during his Sunday morning run with a team of bodyguards at La Lanterne, his weekend residence in Versailles.
A witness walking in the gardens of the Sun King's palace leading to La Lanterne said he saw the President running with his guards. He looked "tired" and suddenly fell over.
Mr Sarkozy's wife, Carla Bruni-Sarkozy, 41, rushed to the scene on a scooter, the witness said.
Two helicopters landed in the woods shortly afterwards, and Mr Sarkozy was transported to the hospital in Paris.
Advisers said he had suffered a "minor vasovagal episode" - a problem with the vagal nerve in the brain which slows the heart rate and blood pressure and can occur during exercise. He was expected to have further tests.
"He had this problem when he was exercising, jogging. He has come round," said Claude Guéant, Mr Sarkozy's chief of staff.
"The president is totally conscious, his episode did not last very long. He's doing well and talking normally to medical staff."

Sarko collapsed while jogging near the Presidential weekend retreat.
He was helicoptered out to Val de Grace Military Hosptal in the Veme arrondissement of Paris
As of the latest news report, it was a Vegal Nerve Syncope, something thought to be not particularly serious, although it presents dramatically.
He will be under observation and given all medical tests, until at least noon tomorrow.
Val de Grace is a first rate Hospital, and the care is up to the latest high standards, and of excellent quality, not just for dignitaries.
Our prayers are with Sarko and his family for a speedy recover.
He needs to ease up on the Viagra.
Not with a wife like that :)
Probably nothing to really worry about - people in perfectly normal health suffer vaso-vagal episodes from time to time, and live long and healthy lives. However, it does point out, that there really is no one to take his place - basically there’s Sarko and then there is everyone else. A la votre, Sarko!
I would have gladly allowed Sarkozy to collapse on me.
:::sigh:::
That's no doubt where his problem lies, and I'm only being half-facetious. Viagra and similar drugs lower the blood pressure, sometimes dangerously.
Thanks Cincinna.
Sarko should take a rest, these are stressful times.
Well, I think he needs a thorough checkup to see if they can find the problem. Because it’s not healthy if you don’t exercise, either. Although I prefer walks in the country to jogging.
His critics will find some satisfaction in this. They had criticized his jogging as being too American, as something George Bush would do.
Putin poisoning in the works.
Reckon I should have read it. I was thinking of the Ruskie.
