Can this political marriage be saved?
BY GARY BAUER
Psychologists have discovered that the most important factor in predicting whether a marriage will succeed or fail is the existence of contempt. When one or both partners display contempt -- the intense feeling or attitude of regarding someone or something as inferior -- the union, ultimately and almost inevitably, will fail.
Psychologist John Gottman has even developed a methodology that enables him to predict divorce with an astonishingly high degree of accuracy, up to 90 percent. While watching a couple interact, Mr. Gottman looks for the subtle signs -- microexpressions such as an eye roll or a patronizing tone -- that reveal not just displeasure or disapproval, but also the hostile inflexibility that is a hallmark of contempt.
As a political analyst and Republican of more than 30 years, I am saddened to say this, but contempt has contaminated the Republican Party. And much of the contempt has been directed at one partner in the party's marriage, religious conservatives. If the Republican partnership is to survive, the contempt must end.

Intraparty contempt has been most conspicuous in some Republicans' treatment of Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin. In a recent Palin hit piece in Vanity Fair, Todd S. Purdum quoted several Republican strategists and advisers from Sen. John McCain's presidential campaign... Former McCain adviser John Weaver dismissed Mrs. Palin's presidential prospects, saying, "She is the darling of a certain element" of the Republican Party. McLame himself probably dislikes Palin. |

Sadly, Republican contempt for that "element" -- social and religious conservatives -- is nothing new. I noticed it back in 2007 as former New York Mayor Rudolph W. Giuliani's presidential candidacy began to generate interest. Social conservatives opposed to Mr. Giuliani were ridiculed for being childish or fanatical, while pro-Giuliani religious conservatives were patted on the head and informed that they finally had reached "political adulthood."Replace Giuliani with Romney, and the same thing is happening today.

As a Libertarian, I don’t loathe Conservatives at all
Libertarians and Conservatives have the same view on how the law apply to social issues, States decides it unless its in the Constituion
Rinos on the other hand has no business being in the party. Not only are they socially liberal, they’re also for big government

They dont represent us fiscally, economically, socially, and they do not put America first. The RINOs all drank the new world order kool-aid. I can see very little to interest me in them. Frankly, if the alternative wasnt literally communist, i would probably never vote repub again.

Its a big government/small government split in this country. The GOP needs to turn into a small government opposition to the big government RINO’s and Democrats. If the GOP continues to go down the failed path of compassionate conservatism then they will fail.

While I consider myself pro-choice. I do think the left are pro-abortion. I dont see why a freedom to decide, has now become someone must pay for it this freedom.
Palin is no threat to liberal Republicans, she made no attempt to force her social views on others. I think this rift in the GOP between liberal and conservatives on social issues is not there. Its a rift between Socialist GOP and Capitalist GOP

I’m sure the subtle difference escape you.
Pro-abortion are those who advocate for more abortion to happen and for others to pay for it, so that the individual can do it for free. And celebrate that lots of abortion occur
Pro-choice just support someone decision to decide for themselves and to pay with their own money

What I see here is people concerned about a lot of things in America, one of those is who we are as a people and a nation of those people.

That's the way I see it too. There are many GOPers -- on this very message board, even -- that are sympathetic to Marxism; spew class warfare rhetoric; are pro-union, bash international trade, and line up squarley with the 'progressive' Left on many fiscal matters. I have never seen them, where are they? I do see a lot of liberals/libertarians that share our fiscal policies but despise us for social conservatism and americanism.
