Outrage as Obama stands by his attack on 'stupid' police for 'racist' arrest of Harvard scholar
Daily Mail (U.K.) ^ | July 24, 2009

Barack Obama is facing the anger of liberal Massachusetts today after being engulfed in a race row over the arrest of a black Harvard scholar.

Mr Obama is facing criticism after saying that white police officers had acted 'stupidly' in arresting Henry Louis Gates, a prominent black Harvard University scholar, who was locked outside his own home.

Police chiefs accused him of alienated officers across the country with his statement.

But last night Mr Obama stood by his remarks, saying cooler heads should have prevailed.

Commentators said the president had crossed a line by passing judgement without all the facts, and police in Massachusetts were said to be 'deflated' by his comments.

Sergeant James Crowley, who arrested Gates at his home in Cambridge, Massachusetts, said he was disappointed in the president.

'I support the president to a point, yes, I think it's disappointing that he waded into what should be a local issue and something that plays out here,' he said.

'As he himself said ... he doesn't know all the facts.'

'The President has alienated public safety officers across the country by his comments,' said David Holway, president of the International Brotherhood of Police Officers, which represents 15,000 public security officials.

In a letter to Mr Obama, he sought an apology. 'You not only used poor judgement in your choice of words, you indicted all members of the Cambridge police department and public safety officers across the country.'

But Mr Obama stood by his views last night, telling ABC News he was 'surprised' by the controversy surrounding his remark.

'I think it was a pretty straightforward commentary that you probably don't need to handcuff a guy, a middle-aged man who uses a cane, who's in his own home

'I think that I have extraordinary respect for the difficulties

What’s fishy here is that Gates as a law professor knows or should have known that when a police officer comes to your door and asks you to step outside it is for a very good reason—you lose all the constitutional protections you have while in your home if you step into the public.

Myselff, I would never answer the door to police because they can also YANK you outside, and did just that up in Portlnd Oregon on some sweep they were having there.

No, if the police persist in knocking, either call 911 and ask what the problem is, or (and I don’t recommend this) open a window and asked for i.d. Under no circumstances is it anything BUT stupid to open the door:

A little 10 year old down the street says you touched/annoyed her. Open the door and step outside into the public and you can be arrested based on the officer’s own forming of probable cause. Keep the door closed and the only way you can be arrested is with an arrest warrant and a search warrant.

So I have a hard time believing that Gates wasn’t setting up the police when he could have stayed in his house and yelled anything he wanted at them as they left. Still, the arrest was probably an over reaction.

What does Al Sharpton have to say about this?
I’m sure he’s weighed in on the matter.
To destroy 0bama politically for good, we need only link him to Al Sharpton on this controversy.
Has Al given us any ammunition?
Is Al defending 0bama? Are they reading from the same script?

Where’s Obama getting his facts, the DailyKos? Is the MSM (I don’t watch them other than FOX occasionally) calling him on his lies. The guy followed the officer outside screaming, that is when he was arrested.

This is as much about Obama’s elitism as his racism.

I was making the point that police arrest blacks and whites for doing this all the time but that doesn't make it right.

For doing what?

His racism begets his elitism.

I was saddened the Our President did not apologize today for his jumping to a conclusion and judgment the other night. He kind of, sort of, well maybe, maybe not, did, did not apoligize and that is not good enough. I felt like he was blaming me and every one else when he was the one that said it.. I didn’t.
Pres. Obama, you go all around the world and apologize for this country (which I disagree with) but you are not stepping up to the podium and apologizing for your actions!

From what I know, Gates is a Professor of African American Studies or something to that effect. Nonetheless, I imagine he’s an intelligent fellow.

If he “setup” the situation, then yeh, still guilty.

I get the feeling that he had a bad day, had a chip on his shoulder and has the ability to play the race card - plus he’s probably pumped up because his buddy is in the White House.

If I’m in his shoe’s in this situation, I’m happy the police are doing their job and I’m helping them do their job and move on..

If I’m in my garage, on the other hand, cleaning my guns and some namby pamby neighbor calls the police freaking out because they just happened to walk by and notice a firearm then we have another situation....

In the end, this race card crap has to end and “disorderly conduct” needs “reform” almost as bad as we need Tort Reform.

With only six interminable, excruciating months allegedly in Office, OBOZO has thrown under the Bus America’s Entire Free Enterprise System, the Banking System, all Doctors and Health Providers, Our Proud Military, the entire Republican Party and all Voters who didn’t support him, all of America’s Past Good deeds and everything else that is America even forbidding Businesses to have Conventions in Las Vegas! Sounds more like Hugo Chavez’s mentor, than a President of the United States doesn’t it!

Nice Summation.

I told my dear sainted Obama-swooning Mom 3 days after the election that I fully expected Obama to be the worst president in my lifetime, surpassing the egregious Jimmah Carter. She was dumbfounded, she thought she had voted for the second coming of JFK.

I can't believe I've been proven right SO SOON.

4 long years before we spit out this mediocre leftwing charlatan.

For doing what?

For arguing with or, in some cases, evening question a cop! Youtube has many cases including that of a 72 white grandmother tased for arguing (ironically the suddenly "pro-police" Fox took her side!) and a student who was tased for questioning a cop and refusing to sign as ticket (as his his right). Both were right. As a free American I should have a perfect right to argue with a cop be he an ATF agent or a member of a local police department. This is a free speech issue.

A free American citizen has a right to argue with a cop without being arrested. This is America, not the Soviet Union (or at least used to be).

Does a free American citizens deserve to be attacked by the President of the United States, in front of millions of Americans, implying they are stupid and racist before knowing the facts?

That is an entirely separate issue. If you don't believe me, go to youtube

Utube?

First you tell me I am referring to is an entirely separate issue, then you refer me to U-tube to watch entirely different events and separate incidents.

Ya see something wrong with your logic here?

Youtube has many cases including that of a 72 white grandmother bla bla bla

What a minute here.

You keep telling me what I brought up was an entirely separate issue, but you keep referring me to entirely separate incidents on utube..

I can show you thousands of videos where people are abusing cops, killing cops, shooting cops, assaulting cops, spitting on cops, throwing rocks at cops, and stabbing cops....

Do utube videos incidents of cops being abused have anything to do with the Gates/Obama incident?

His speeches pull from a menu of focus-group tested terms. His handlers have him perfectly programmed to keep saying these mantras. Goebbels would be so proud. Scarily, this is a very shallow human being. He can blather on with the thoughts of others and he makes his “followers” believe they are his words. Just as with his two books, the speeches he regurgitates are the words of his puppeteers. He speaks of false choices every speech, he talks of values, without having any of his own, and he has nary a word of praise for the country where he was able to climb to the presidency without ever having an original thought. The only “false choice” we suffered through was last November when we had to choose between Obama and Obama-white.
