Gates Arrest Not About Race But Free Speech
The New York Times ^ | November 19, 1997 | Deborah Sontag and Dan Barry

Posted on 07/23/2009 4:46:52 PM PDT by parsifal

After dropping her young daughter with a baby sitter, Taquana Harris rushed to her hostess job at the fashionable Bowery Bar one night last February, her leopard-print evening gown sweeping elegantly through the dark, icy streets of the East Village. Then a strange woman crudely grabbed her by the arm and demanded to know what she had done with the drugs.

Within seconds, Ms. Harris recalled, she found herself pinned to the steel grating of a bodega by two plainclothes officers engaged in a neighborhood drug sweep.

Was it not Obama that made this a race issue as he was speaking to millions of people?

There used to be a gay weatherman in Little Rock, who was married and in the closet. He got caught at the local park one night “trolling.” His biggest mistake, outside of looking for love in all the wrong places, was telling the cop “Do you know who I am?”

Nobody is talking about Gates' companion. He was a witness and could corroborate Gates' story. Where did he disappear to? NOBODY is mentioning him. Why?

I think Gates was clearly out of place going off on the racial profiling issue when the cops were there to investigate a legitimate issue.

Do you think Gates fabricated these racial allegations against the cop?

That’s my point. Spout off at a cop, and expect to pick your teeth up, if you can before they cuff you, taser you, and probe you.

Well you can spin it anyway you want to but this AH Gates is just a microcosm of most of the Black race. He made it about race form the jump and thankfully most white people have had enough of this racial crap from the perpetual whiners.

I don’t think Gates is “fabricating” them per se. I think he really believes it is racial. Which kind of makes him a bigot who stereotyped the police. But all that is irrelevant. He was arrested for running off his mouth.

Suppose we all gather at the White House and yell and holler “Obama is a jerk! He hates white people” As long as we don’t start chunking bricks or teabags at people, we have a right to say it.

Same with Gates. He was wrong. Period. He was out of place. Period. But he committed no crime. It is why the charges were dropped.

I completely agree Gates was wrong. He is seeing racism where none exists. So if the arrest isn’t about “race”, why was he arrested?

Answer: He spouted off his mouth at Johnny Law. Pure and simple.

So, let’s do our best to get the truth out.

You’re not really comparing those cases, with this, are you?

"...AFTER identification had been presented to the cop.."

The Harvard ID didn't have an address.

Perhaps his driver's license is not from MA and/or does not include that particular address, as Gates is renting (or given?) that house?

I've had cops at my house (due to a neighbor), and we had a civil discussion. The issue was settled in my favor after a trip to court. No need to get all in a huff, though the neighbor is on my list.

The officer was investigating a report of a possible break-in. He doesn’t know Gates from Adam. Gates has an issue with white police officers. He started mouthing off. If he had just explained who he was and that it was his house, nothing would have happened. So who is to blame, Gates or the police officer?

And who says you have a right to rant at, rave, and insult police? Is that the kind of society you want to live in?

Gates had his head up his rear end. The cops came there because they thought someone had broken in. Not because he was black. But because a neighbor saw someone forcing the door open.

Gates should have just shown his ID. BUT, Gates thought he was being profiled, which isn’t a wild stretch, it was just a bad assumption on his part here.

Gates is seeing racism, and he spouts off, but so what? Its a free country and he can spout off most any stupid thing he wants to. Once the cop had his ID, he should have just left and not made this into a federal case.

But dang it, that guy insulted me, so out come the cuffs.

“And who says you have a right to rant at, rave, and insult police? Is that the kind of society you want to live in?’

Well....the Bill of Rights. Yes, I want to live in society where I can insult the police, and the governor, and congressmen, and presidents.

I do not approve of rudeness, but it isn’t illegal.

However, neither is it a crime, especially when directed at a government official.

So you're of the opinion that the hired help can be treated like chattel? I guess I wouldn't want to work for you.

The radio interview with Sergeant Crowley should be required listening for anyone posting on this subject.

Yep. If it was a gay lover Gates could have called the cop a homophobic racist. It doesn't get much worse than that.

Sgt. Crowley is getting a break out of this. He did something wrong and he is being clobbered, but for the wrong reason, racism.

He should be getting clobbered over abusing his power.
