The white police sergeant criticized by President Barack Obama for arresting black scholar Henry Louis Gates Jr. in his Massachusetts home is a police academy expert on racial profiling.
Cambridge Sgt. James Crowley has taught a class on racial profiling for five years at the Lowell Police Academy after being hand-picked for the job by former police Commissioner Ronny Watson, who is black, said Academy Director Thomas Fleming.
"I have nothing but the highest respect for him as a police officer. He is very professional and he is a good role model for the young recruits in the police academy," Fleming told The Associated Press on Thursday.
The course, called "Racial Profiling," teaches about different cultures that officers could encounter in their community "and how you don't want to single people out because of their ethnic background or the culture they come from," Fleming said.
Obama has said the Cambridge officers "acted stupidly" in arresting Gates last week when they responded to his house after a woman reported a suspected break-in.
Crowley, 42, has maintained he did nothing wrong and has refused to apologize, as Gates has demanded.
Crowley responded to Gates' home near Harvard University last week to investigate a report of a burglary and demanded Gates show him identification. Police say Gates at first refused, flew into a rage and accused the officer of racism.
Gates was charged with disorderly conduct. The charge was dropped Tuesday.

I think we already figured that out.
Why do I have the strange feeling the mediaPUKES are going to pin this on the cop instead of the Gates and Obozo?!
LOL, this just keeps getting better and better!
The AP smears have started.
Figured what out? The headline?
When Is Obama going to apologize to these police officers?
*LOL*..no wonder he has no problem slamming TOTUS
It’s a shame reality and facts are meaningless to leftist racist ideologues.
Hahaha - this is rich!
I’ve been taken for a prowler on my property by someone who called the police. The cops showed up, grabbed me, etc. I told them to check my ID, they did, and that was it.
I don’t think Professor Gates fits the typical profile of a criminal, but he sure acted a fool out there. I respect Mr. Gate’s work as a researcher on genealogy and all but did not represent very well. Not very dignified, Professor.
Looks like the sarg was spot on this time.
It will take them a day or so to go through all his private information.
If they can’t find something to trash him with, they will make something up.
Either way, they will try to ruin him IMHO.
The media pukes will kill his presidency with this nonsense. Racial issues for good reason make people queasy, even the Kos kids are a little hesitant to form up a lynch mob and go get whitey on this. The WH if it had any sense would get their state run media to TSFU.
Maybe he can help track down that pesky birth certificate.
The officer gave mouth-to-mouth resuscitation to a black basketball player trying to save his life and he’s been teaching a course about racial sensitivity for five years. He was handpicked to teach this course by a black police commissioner.
And Obama thinks he’s a racist cop.
LOL!
Looks like the racist Gates picked the wrong police officer to further his agenda.
He has already announced there will be no apology.
He only slandered a white guy.
There's no political cost to that. In fact, there's political gain in showing his racism toward a white man in the twisted reality of the Left.
He knows very well the rules for playing the race card. He knows he wouldn't be sitting where he is without doing so.
The police officers even gave this “Do you know who I am” elitist the courtesy of being handcuffed in the front of his body instead of the back.
