National Evaluation of a Mileage Based-Based Road User Charge

The motor fuel tax has funded America’s roads for over 70 years. It has served its purpose well and has many positive features, the most important being that it is easy to pay (many people may not even be aware that their total at the gas pump includes this tax).

However, the gas tax may need updating. Reasons for this include:

WIOD in South Florida is running ads for participants in this study in Florida to see if it would be better to charge us for the miles we drive our cars.

For information, they say to go to their website. Here's the link:

The government plans to monitor EVERY move we make.

Odometer checks are too simplistic. I drive my vehicles in Idaho, Utah, Montana, Wyoming, Nevada, Arizona and California in any given year. When I purchase gas during traversal of those states, I'm paying in proportion to my use of their roads. The odometer is going to be read by my state. There isn't annual registration in Idaho. It can be done for 2 or 3 year periods and performed online with stickers delivered via postal mail. There is no annual inspection in Pocatello either. It's really nice to not have that level of intrusive government.

GPS can sort out when the vehicle is operating on a road supported taxes vs off-road where no tax is due or payable. It can sort out what state as well. I still think the simple per gallon gas tax is the most equitable approach.

Thanks for reminding me to sign up at Roaduserstudy.com out of the U of Iowa (866 363 - 1975). Their piece of pork will study us drivers so that they can better tell us how to live our lives.

Imagine if a couple hundred freepers were to sign up for their scientific study that already probably has made is pre-conclusions.

You are not paying enough taxes to the government pension funds paying people not to work.

If most states are like California, the amount of tax payed is not known to most citizens because they will not place it on the pumps. All they say is “Tax included”.

Oh yes, let’s let a bunch of college students and their professors, none of whom have ever lived in the real world, run a business, etc., do studies aimed at radically changing our transportation policies and the way we pay taxes. You know that these people reached their conclusions and then started looking for factoids to back them up.

Oh this is just so hunky dory! Scroll down to see the installation of the computer in your car. You will be a good citizen and do your part to make sure you pay your fair share.

They will even pay you $895 to be a part of this study. Imagine that.

Absolutely! No other approach is as simple and uncomplicated or provides as little opportunity for The Man to interfere with our lives.

They want to move to a taxing system that gives them more control over what they can charge and how they can charge and collect it.

It's the KISS principle for me when it comes to anything government wants to get involved in doing or overseeing.

The computer could also be designed to record and position and speed and charge say 10 cents per mile over the speed limit per minute and automatically debit your bank account or post a lien on your property. And a dollar fine every time you make a 90 degree turn without using your turn signal. And every time you pass a stop sign without coming to a complete stop.

I was filling my tank in San Diego when I noticed the tax posted with federal per gallon tax, state per gallon tax and SALES tax as well. They don't do that in Idaho. The SALES tax is 8.75% or 9.75% depending on which city in the San Diego area is involved.

That's cause you're not thinking like an Ivy League-educated associate of the Public Policy Center. He takes his mountain bike to work at some center city Hi-Rise from his rent-controlled co-op. He has no use for a car & doesn't think you should either.

Well duh. They could simply raise taxes. I’d even agree to this IF we were to use those funds ONLY for our roads.

Oh, forgot, it would be a democrat promise (e.g., an oxymoron).

Businesses and communities that rely of tourism from the traveling public for their life’s blood, might want to start thinking of looking for some other income.

Aha! Trying to skirt taxes on a bicycle is no different than trying to skirt the tax burden on gasoline by driving an electric car. Put a GPS on this dimwit's bicycle. He's rolling down the paved streets that were financed with fuel taxes.
