Obama goes prime-time to pitch healthcare

WASHINGTON, July 22 (UPI) -- U.S. President Barack Obama shifts his effort to convince the American people healthcare reform is the right thing to do right now to prime time Wednesday.

In an evening news conference, Obama is expected to outline the case for healthcare reform as well as provide an update on what has been accomplished since he took office in January.

White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel told The New York Times Obama intends to use the news conference as a "six-month report card," to talk about "how we rescued the economy from the worst recession" and the legislative agenda moving forward, including health care and energy legislation.

I sent the following email to ALL of my Congresscritters (in BOTH houses):

Dear Senator/Congressman _________,

President Obama has often cited the (dubious) number of ~46million Americans without health INSURANCE as his justification for completely revamping America’s healthcare system. Of that ~46 million figure cited, approximately half are believed to be people who voluntarily choose not to BUY health insurance. When I was younger, I also voluntarily opted NOT to BUY health INSURANCE!!

So, my question to you is this: In a country of over 300 million Americans, why does the Congress feel the need to completely disrupt the health care system as it currently exists, because an estimated 46 million people cannot or will not BUY health insurance? Why is the president and the Congress discussing an overpriced, “one-size-fits-all” plan that affects ALL Americans in order to accommodate a handful of Americans??

On a tangent, I never had a problem with the “Mission Accomplished” banner. The Lincoln was returning from the Middle East, where their mission was to provide air support for the removal of Saddam’s regime. The Lincoln was returning because their mission was.....accomplished! The fact that the war was not over is irrelevant to the mission that the carrier was given.

Bush’s biggest problem was if he (or any of his staff) thought the banner was applicable to the wider conflict. From the viewpoint of a crewman on the Lincoln (which I’m not), though, MISSION ACCOMPLISHED is well-deserved. The point was just lost on most....
