LONG BEACH, Calif. (AP) The California State University system raised student fees Tuesday by 20 percent as part of a budget plan that would also shrink enrollment and furlough nearly all employees for two days a month.
The Board of Trustees voted 17-1 to raise undergraduate fees by $672 a year to $4,827 in the nation's largest four-year university system.
The fee increase, which follows a 10 percent hike approved in May, is part of the 23-campus system's plan to close a $584 million budget shortfall caused by an unprecedented drop in state funding to CSU, which has with 450,000 students.

"You're going to see the gentrification of the CSU and the door close to higher education for working-class people," said Aaron Buchbinder, 26, a graduate student in social work at San Francisco State University. "I'm going to pile up more debt, and it's going to take me longer to pay off."
Then get a degree that's actually in demand, Aaron.

$4800 a year for a university education is damn cheap. These punks ought to be keeping their heads down and their mouths shut.

The California state system(s) have a built-in bias against OUT OF STATE applicants (with their out of state tuition payments). At the same time you spend a year in CA you get in-state tuition.
They really need to straighten this out ~ attract out of state students and up the residence requirements for those who started out as out of state students.
Many states do that.

Actually it is a lot of money if your mommy and daddy aren’t paying your way. Too bad the university system doesn’t instead cut all the waste like overpayed professors and administrators and settlements for professors sexually abusing their students (I remember reading where the state paid out several million dollars to settle such claims). How about getting rid of Chicano,Black and Women Studies programs? Oh I forgot, that’s where our community organizers get “educated”(that’s why Obama wants to invest billions for the community college system).

Well, that's true too ~ China, Pakistan, Malaysia, India ~ and elsewhere in America. There are, after all, some great graduate level programs in the CA state system. UCLA has, for example, a Fine Arts program unequaled on Earth ~ particularly when it comes to TV and Video.
Still, the system has a bias against out of state folks who would otherwise arrive with the big bucks necessary to keep the schools in business during the hard times.
Indiana University is imposing a 5.8% tuition increase on out of state students. They're already at about 43% out of state attendees on the main campus in Bloomington.
Still, you can get a degree from them in a number of fields by computer at in state rates ~ provided you've finished three years somewhere else.
I've often thought it ironic that California's university systems are so parochial and schools out in the middle of the continent take a totally different approach.

It's right up there with a degree in "diversity studies"...code for "I can't do anything useful, so I found a career that I make up as I go along". Ask Michelle Obama!

The taxpayers are still subsidizing the students pretty heavily. I wonder what the union members thinks of their unions now?
