Obama popularity lower than Bush's at six-month mark: poll

WASHINGTON (AFP) – President Barack Obama's tumbling poll numbers have dipped below those of his predecessor George W. Bush at the same point in his White House tenure, according to a national poll released Tuesday.

Obama's approval rating is 55 percent six months into his presidency, a USA Today/Gallup poll found. But 56 percent of those polled approved of the job done by George W. Bush after six months, the daily reported.

Obama's handling of the economy appears to be key in his fading popularity, as Americans become more pessimistic about how long it will take the economic downturn to end.

"His ratings have certainly come back down to Earth in a very short time period," Republican pollster Whit Ayres told the daily.

By 49 percent to 47 percent, respondents said they disapprove of Obama's handling of the economy, while they disapprove of his health care policy by 50 percent to 44 percent.

Nevertheless, White House adviser David Axelrod called the "turbulence" predictable, and expressed confidence in the public's support for the president.

"People fundamentally like this president, and they believe he's smart and capable and strong and trying to do the right thing," he said.

I notice they didn’t have Rasmussen on that graph. Bush finished Rasmussen with a 35% approval. Obama is only 15% above that right now.

Reagan was against a Democrat controlled congress and didn’t have the media propping him up. It took a few years for his reforms to have a positive impact.

In contrast Obama has a “friendly” Congress as it’s his own party in control. The media gushes over him. And his programs will not have a positive impact in a few years if enacted.

Right now only Ford and Clinton were worse. Ford never won an election as President. Clinton ended up setting his Congress on a road to being wiped out in ‘94. Had he been up for re-election then he’d have been gone as well. The Republican Congress newly elected saved him 2 years later by stopping many of his initiatives.

Obama's poll numbers right now mean nothing good - Bush's numbers came in a much better economy. Considering the economic crisis we're currently in, the fact that Obama is able to maintain such numbers while pushing for disastrous energy and health care initiatives is a clear indication that the GOP has not made any real or convincing case against his policies. The real story is how ineffective and crippled the GOP seems right now - the only glimmer of hope I see for '12 is Palin.

Does anyone have the internals of this poll, How many democrats did Gallup poll vs Republicans?

I suspect Obama’s true approval ratings are actually a fair bit lower than what Gallup tells us, as noted by Rasmussen’s poll showing him down around 51% consistently.

For one, he is on par with Ronald Reagan at this stage in his presidency”

I wouldn't read much into that if I were you.
You seem to be forgetting that 0bama’s numbers keep falling, despite almost 100% cover up and media worship from the lame brain media. By contrast, Reagan was under constant unrelenting attacks from the liberal media from day one. That 0bama is lower than even President Bush at this stage in his presidency, despite Bush winning less than 50% of the popular vote, and despite Bush/Reagan being constantly attacked by the media, as compared to sickening media worship of 0bama, means 0Bama is in very deep trouble.

For another thing, Reagan fought and won the cold war, while 0Bama is busy surrendering to every left wing/Islamic dictator he can find.
For another, Reagan didn’t rack a staggering deficit of over $1 Trillion in just 6 months. Not even close.
And for another, Reagan didn't preside over the worst recession this country has seen since the Great Depression.
Readgan had things going for him, that 0bama can only dream of. 0bama should be much higher in the polls than Reagan or Bush at this stage in their presidencies, , because the media's non-critical worshipful coverage alone is worth at least another 10 points to 0bama.

Ah, but you forget....GWB and other Presidents were normal human beings...Hussein is the messiah.

The commie MSM/DNC/Hollywood/Academia war room will find a way to boost him up to walk on water again.

“”People fundamentally like this president, and they believe he's smart and capable and strong and trying to do the right thing,” he said.”

The reality is that he is fairly ignorant. I don't mean stupid. I mean ignorant, like most college students before they've lived a bit in the world. Obama has never really lived in the world. I know of few people more closed minded and less worldly than academics, and I have spent my entire life in academia. Obama has the predictable naive and ignorant views of many academics, and the ironic arrogance that many academics have as well. This crowd is so small minded in general that you could list all of their beliefs in about three or four pages of standard text and predict pretty much what they all think before they voice their thoughts.

Looks like he either paid off the wrong people or didn’t pay the right people enough, hence the need for Stimulus II. One of those trillions is bound to hit its mark!

Disagree.
Bush came in with less than 50% of the popular vote, while 0Bama cane in with what 53% of the popular vote, no?
That advantage alone means 0Bama should be at least 3% ahead of Bush at this time in his presidency.
Plus, Bush was viciously attacked by the media, even BEFORE he took office, when he was fighting Algore over the Florida vote, and was under constant attack from the media from day one. By contrast, 0bama has been getting non-stop worship from the media from even before he took office. That media's 0bama cover-up/worship alone should be worth at least another 10% points to 0bama. If we are going by what that Newsweek editor said, their deliberate slanting and bais in the news alone is worth in the region of 15% in the polls to Democratic president/presidential candidates.

Obama’s poll numbers are inflated by any & all Moron Media polls...I think they are likely in the 40’s and repidly falling. His desperation on the OCare will become more and more obvious...as Jim Demint says, BO’s Waterloo is pegged on it!

The difference is Obama has received almost 100% favorable, even fawning, media coverage. I don't remember Reagan's press during the same period, but I do remember that GW was still getting trashed daily over "the lock-box" and Congressional Democrats were still ranting about the "selected president", while every one his cabinet nominees was being anally examined and bashed in the press.

For Obama to be even one point below Bush at the same point is incredible.

I bet his approval percentage would be in the single digits if the press treated him the way they did Bush.

Although, I still think George W is partially responsible for his dismal numbers as well.

Bush's numbers came in a much better economy

We were in a recession in 2001, which the MSM, of course, made out to be the worst since the Depression.

If we have another major attack like 9-11 (or worse), I wouldn’t doubt for one bit that his poll numbers will climb like W’s did.

I disagree. He wouldn't show the same strength President Bush did and many people will blame him for the attack.
