Six-Month Delay for Obama-Gitmo Report Washington Post: Task Force on Detentions Still Working, Though Administration Remains Committed to Closing Prison
(Washington Post) This story was written by Peter Finn. The Obama administration is delaying completion of reports examining U.S. detention and interrogation policy, officials said Monday, in a sign of the formidable issues it faces in grappling with how to handle terrorism suspects as it prepares to close the military prison at Guantanamo Bay.
The work of a Justice Department-led task force, which had been scheduled to send a report on detention policy to President Obama on Tuesday, will be extended for six months, according to senior administration officials. A second task force examining interrogation policy will get a two-month extension to complete its work, which had also been due Tuesday.
"These are hard, complicated, consequential decisions," one official said in a White House briefing in which four officials spoke to reporters on the condition that the officials not be named. "What we are trying to do is to make sure that we make the right decisions. And so they are looked at, they are reviewed and re-reviewed. By teeing them up to the president, we want to make sure that we have looked at every single angle, because he will challenge us on these issues."
The officials said the administration remains committed to closing the prison in Cuba by January 2010, as Obama ordered, but the delays are an indication of the political and legal complexities of making good on the president's timeline.
Some of the Guantanamo Bay detainees may be deemed too dangerous to release but also too difficult to prosecute in federal court or before a military commission.

Terrorists..can’t live with ‘em, can’t kill ‘em

Obama’s fault. Where are all the protesters?
I think we ought to scoop up a bunch of media “journalists” and dump them in Gitmo in the middle of the prisoner’s recreation area.
“These are hard, complicated, consequential decisions.”
Looks like Junior couldn’t figure that out in Jan when he decreed he’d shut down Gitmo by year end....and no one told him.
This is a send in the clowns government, but there’s nothing funny about it. The country is going to crater.
Translation: "We're gettin' hammered on everything and really need a break, so let's bury this until in the year when we can release it late on a Friday afternoon, round Christmas.
It seemed like an easy decision during the campaign? What happened between then and now to complicate matters?
They miss this deadline just like they missed their Cabinet $100 million budget cuts yesterday. Maybe Obama should have did a little more research before jumping off the cliff for Gitmo?
But, but, but Urkel read a triumphant speech from his Teleprompter machine, congratulating himself on the closure of Gitmo.
I thought the way it worked was that the words that Obama reads to us on a daily basis are immediately tranferred into physical reality by some sort of supernatural process.
So that when he says, I will cure the economy with this stimulus, unemployment drops and millions of jobs are created. That when Gitmo is announced to be closing, that the terrorists held there will simply confess, renounce terrorism, and then throw themselves on the mercy of Obama, the Teleprompter Stooge.
No sh!t, sherlock. It's a lot harder to actually be responsible for results than it was to criticize how those who were responsible were doing it in the past, isn't it?
Why the majority of American voters thought community organizing was sufficent preparation for anything except pandering and stealing elections is beyond me.

Don't make me laugh. Pres__ent 0, that lightweight, will go along with whatever is political expedient. He is incapable of intellectual analysis of an issue. His background is "community organizer", nothing more.
The only reason he even touched the issue of Gitmo was to impugn Bush. Now that he has the "problem", he has no earthly idea of what to do with it. I hope it continues to be a millstone around his neck as long as he's Pres__ent.
The majority of American voters didn’t give his qualifications so much as a thought. They just went in and voted for the “Magic N@gro” because (a) he was pretty, (b) he said pretty words, (c) he was the right color, (d) the voter felt “guilty” for all the centuries of “oppression”, or (e) all of the above. Nothing had to do with qualifications. That’s why we’ve got what we have.
Can we put the adults back in charge now? I’ve had enough....
Six months to destroy, hide mysteriously have docs disapear... Yes all to make Mr Cheney Look bad. We believe you Barry ya thats it!
I know ... that’s how too many Americans make decisions, based on emotion, misconceptions etc.
I was being rhetorical to make a point. They voted for the reasons you stated but what they got was a community organizer.
