Dear Friends,
Last week, House Democrats introduced their health reform legislation. The Americas Affordable Choices Act of 2009 (H.R. 3200) is over 1,000 pages long and, in my opinion, puts the government in charge of our health care system. A preliminary estimate by the non-partisan Congressional Budget Office (CBO) estimates that the plan will cost at least $1 trillion and still leave 17 million people uninsured-the population of the state of Florida. Furthermore, nothing in this legislation limits these benefits to those who are citizens.
Speaker Pelosi has said we need to pass this in the next two weeks. I don't agree with rushing something this important through so quickly. The Congress should not recess until this is thoroughly debated and considered.
I wanted to let you know that I have created an online survey that you can find on my website. As we move forward with the health reform debate, I encourage you to visit http://kaygranger.house.gov/healthcaresurvey where you can share your thoughts with me about what should be done to improve our health care system.
For example, many Texans have already told me the rising costs of health care are a burden on their families. In fact, the cost for a years worth of premium payments for an average family has increased over $1,600 since 1999. Millions are worried of losing health coverage, while others go without any insurance at all. Currently, one in four Texans is uninsured. Also, the shortage of primary care physicians means the quality of care individuals receive is diminished because of the sheer number of patients versus the doctors available. The high medical liability cost for doctors drives many away from practicing medicine.
We need to help families and businesses afford their health care and keep what has been the best health care in the world. We all know that health care is expensive, and costs keep rising year after year. Americans spend $2.4 trillion a year on health care. When faced with a major medical emergency, many families find themselves unable to pay their medical bills. I support increasing access to affordable health care, and I look forward to working with my colleagues as Congress works to tackle health reform. These are just a couple of the reasons why I need to hear from you. Please click here to tell me what you think.
As I continue to work on health reform and other tough problems, I will be sure to keep you informed.
Sincerely,
Kay Granger

Thank you for this posting. I have elected representatives who vote straight party line without any apparent attempt to think, so I appreciate an opportunity for input from another state!
