LA Times: Obama to miss Guantanamo deadlines

Washington -- Obama administration officials said Monday they would not meet self-imposed deadlines for deciding what to do with scores of detainees too dangerous to release from the prison in Guantanamo Bay, Cuba.

The delays, involving those who cannot be tried, raise questions about whether the White House can close the prison by January, as President Obama pledged when he took office.

But the officials acknowledged that two reports that were supposed to be delivered to the president by Wednesday -- one on how to overhaul the nation's detention policy and another on interrogation policy -- would not be ready.

Officials emphasized the complexity of the issues and their desire to find solutions that would be acceptable to Congress but could withstand a court challenge.

"We want to get this right and not have another multiple years of uncertainty," one senior administration official said in a background briefing with reporters at the White House. The official spoke on condition of anonymity, citing the sensitivity of the deliberations.

Civil liberties groups expressed concern Monday that the White House was planning to preserve the ability to hold some prisoners indefinitely.

"The Obama administration must not slip into the same legal swamp that engulfed the Bush administration with its failed Guantanamo policies," said Anthony D. Romero, executive director of the American Civil Liberties Union. "A promise deferred could soon become a promise broken."

I thought Obie campaigned on already having a plan to close Gitmo. Just like he has had a plan for everything else he is now setting up task forces for.

I guess he had a plan before he didn't have a plan...

Jim Inhofe has a petition to keep Gitmo open.

There is a link to the petition in this post: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/news/2297355/posts?page=1

I really think Obama and his administration are so pruriently fixated and absorbed in changing the foundations of this country that they are actually managerially inept. Not that they lack the potential ability to manage, it's just that all their focus and effort is being placed on working to upend this country at light-speed before any next election that may stymie them that they simply lack the capacity at this moment to actually manage anything.

This should actually frighten people that Obama, Axelrod, and Emmanual are working with such fanatical zeal.

If they show up in Leavenworth, you will see more than a few Democrats in Kansas, Nebraska, Iowa and Missouri speak out against Obama, on this one!

Oops, missed another deadline. Sorry, we were working on the 100 million in budgetary cuts that we were supposed have done last week.

Signed

Am I correct in recalling that one of the Gitmo prisoners Obama released has already been caught in a terrorist act? If so, whose policies failed?

The Obozo and his group of incompetents can't get this done on time, they can't release the budget report on time, but the want a Health Care bill right now?

What complete imbeciles.

That's only part of the problem. The biggest part of the problem is that zero had never run anything before he was elected POTUS. Never run a company, never met a payroll, never crated/managed a budget, never created a single job other than for himself.

This is why professional amateurs should NEVER be allowed to run for president.

But he still insists we have to meet deadlines on getting health care and cap and tax done.

This is insanity.
